Im Sommer 1968 besuchte der pakistanische Aussenminister die Hauptstadt der Volksrepublik China und übergab Mao Zedong als Gastgeschenk eine Kiste Mangos. Noch in derselben Nacht liess Mao diese an die Arbeiter der Propagandatrupps in der renommierten Qinghua-Universität verteilen, die wenige Tage zuvor dorthin entsandt worden waren, um die studentischen Roten Garden zu ersetzen. Das Geschenk löste wahre Begeisterungsstürme aus. In kürzester Zeit wurde die Mango zu einem Inbild für Maos Güte und Fürsorge und zum Zentrum kultischer Verehrung. Schnell griffen die Politstrategen das Thema auf und machten die Frucht zum Symbol des politischen Machtwechsels. Bald wurde sie auf zahllosen Plakaten, Verpackungen, Alltags- und Haushaltsgegenständen abgebildet. Das Buch zeichnet die erstaunliche Geschichte dieser Verwandlung von einem Stück Obst über ein Staatsgeschenk in ein quasi-religiös verehrtes Objekt und politisches Zeichen nach.
