My first question about this book was (you guessed it) where is: East of the Sun and West of the Moon , an expedition undertaken by Theordore Roosevelt and his Brother Kermit Roosevelt. Fortunately, there is a route map early on and I can report that it extends from Pakistan to Kashmir through the Himalayas to Mongolia (and more specifically, to the Pamirs, Turkestan and the Tian Shan Mountains. Much of the time of course they were hunting, especially for the legendary big horn type sheep that inhabit this area. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 x 8 ¾ inches, 284 pages) was published by Charles Scribner s Sons of New York, dated 1926 and apparently the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book is bound in dark blue boards with a gilt head of a big horn sheep on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. The book is very well illustrated with a tissue-guarded Frontispiece and 40 more b&w photos and a few maps. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The boards are a bit dust-dulled and there is a small blemish on the front cover and the spine is faded. Inside there is a gift inscription on the front endpaper and I also noted some penciled marginal notes, nothing too extensive or even common. The many photos, however, seem to have led to another issue which is foxing which seems to occur adjacent to the glossy pages on which the photos were printed. It is not pretty but does not affect the overall legibility of the book. The front hinge is intact and the rear starting, but the binding is tight and sound. External fore-edges are rough trimmed. All external edges are age-soiled and with light foxing. Faint erasure marks at upper right corner of FFEP. Gutter is cracked at frontispiece and title-page and also at pp.116-117. Text pages are age-toned, else internally clean. Text block is sound. Dust jacket is sunned and soiled overall and with some stains and scuffs. Sunning is heaviest on spine and fore-edges. Upper corner of back inside flap has crescent-shaped loss of approximately 2 1/2" by 1 1/4". All folds are heavily creased and scuffed; lower right fore-edge corner on the front jacket panel has a 1 1/2" closed vertical tear along the fold, and adjacent to a 1" by 1/2" triangular loss to the lower right corner. Upper edge of back jacket panel has a 1" slightly diagonal closed tear with several adjacent tears, chips and diagonal creases; lower edge of back jacket panel has a 1/2" closed vertical tear, also with diagonal creases, both tears have archival tape repairs on the reverse side. Upper edge at head of jacket spine has loss of 1 3/4" by 1/4" across width and adjacent upper and lower edges. Lower edge at tail of jacket spine is chipped and rubbed. Front and back upper edges are chipped and with several horizontal creases. Fore-edge corners have loss from rubs. Price of $3.50 is intact on the inside front flap.
