The five diverse authors have used three "paired-themes" for the analysis of the American government--the constant tensions between conflict and resolution, continiity and change,m and power and consent. The authors had included both liberal and conservative cartoon on the various problems illustrated. Among some of the topics addressed are Democracy, Federal System, Political Parties, Interest Groups, Voting, Presidency, Executive Branch, Congress, Leadership, Legislative Process, Bureaucracy, Liberty, Justice, Law, Judicial Review, Courts, Law Enforcement, Civil Liberty, Civil Rights, Citizenship, Equality, Natural Resources, Welfare, Taxation, Budget, Defense, Foreign Policy, Federal Agencies, Grass Roots, State Government, and Intergovernmental. This work is considered by some knowledgeable academics to be one of the most innovative, comprehensive and impactful foundational texts used in the middle of the Twentieth Century, during a time of domestic foment (the Civil Rights movement, etc.) and international upheaval (the Cold War and the Vietnam War), as well as a period of at times rapid social, economic and technological change. An important 'marker' as to the state of the art, the state of knowledge, and the state of educational practice and a major historiographical resource. Black lettering on cover. Book is tight and square, despite format and size (396pp, 9" x 6") with no markings or flaws inside or out. A fantastic piece of history - of course the 1948 presidential election in the USA was famous for getting it wrong- predicting complete with headlines in the papers a Dewey win over Truman. The discrepancy was very much a focus and indeed stimulus for this report. Bulletin #60 from the Social Science Research Council. Quite Scarce.…
