Author's autobiography: Grandes Jorasses, mountain skiing, Eigerwand, Lapland, Hunza, Ruwenzori, Mt Waddington, etc. He was leader of the first ascent of the North Face Eiger climb. Anderl Heckmair, alpinista alemán calificado por Reinhold Messner como el cerebro de la cordada que en 1938 conquistara la peligrosísima pared norte del Eiger, relata en este famoso libro, gran clásico de la literatura de montaña, el desarrollo de aquella "carrera alpinística".
