A historical atlas is a collection of maps and possibly illustrations that depict the historical geography of a particular region at a defined time period. These atlases typically include maps that show the political and cultural boundaries of different states as well as other data, and in some cases illustrations that provide information about important historical events and figures. They may also include timelines, charts, and other information to help readers understand the historical context of the maps. Historical atlases are used by scholars, students, and general readers to study and learn about the past. Some try to present the entire history of the world, such as the Historical Atlas of the World, while others are more specialized, for only one time period or location, such as the Historical Atlas of the American West or The Historical Atlas of China. The first known historical atlas may have been the Parergon by Abraham Ortelius in 1579, which was a supplement to the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Presumed First paperback printing of this edition.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. A large central government providing numerous public services has long been a hallmark of Swedish society, which is also well-known for its pursuit of equality. Yet in the 1990s, Sweden moved away from this tradition in education, introducing market-oriented reforms that decentralized authority over public schools and encouraged competition between private and public schools. Many wondered if this approach would improve educational quality, or if it might expand inequality that Sweden has fought so hard to hold down. In The Market Comes to Education in Sweden, economists Anders Bjoerklund, Melissa Clark, Per-Anders Edin, Peter Fredriksson, and Alan Krueger measure the impact of Sweden's bold experiment in governing and help answer the questions that societies across the globe have been debating as they try to improve their children's education. The Market Comes to Education in Sweden injects some much-needed objectivity into the heavily politicized debate about the effectiveness of educational reform. While advocates for reform herald the effectiveness of competition in improving outcomes, others suggest that the reforms will grossly increase educational inequality for young people. The authors find that increased competition did help improve students' math and language skills, but only slightly, and with no effect on the performance of foreign-born students and those with low-educated parents. They also find some signs of increasing school segregation and wider inequality in student performance, but nothing near the doomsday scenarios many feared. In fact, the authors note that the relationship between family background and school performance has hardly budged since before the reforms were enacted. The authors conclude by providing valuable recommendations for school reform, such as strengthening school evaluation criteria, which are essential for parents, students, and governments to make competent decisions regarding education. Whether or not the market-oriented reforms to Sweden's educational system succeed will have far reaching implications for other countries considering the same course of action. The Market Comes to Education in Sweden offers firm empirical answers to the questions raised by school reform and brings crucial facts to the debate over the future of schooling in countries across the world. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st. pictorial boards; CD-ROM missing. A photo book that documents Havana's environments, from the simplest to the most exclusive. Anders Rising's images breathe the fifties and remind us of Castro, Hemingway, Studebaker and Edsel, of all the myths that have been collected, preserved and celebrated and that one cannot escape in Cuba. And in all this emerges what is the real soul of the city, Los habaneros, the Havanans - proud, eloquent, curious and generous. Anders Rising is a freelance photographer with a main focus on architecture and interior design. The text is by the award-winning Cuban author Antonio José Ponte and Eva Björklund, architect and editor of the magazine Kuba. The book comes with a CD with street music and sound environments from today's Havana. Text in Swedish. 164pp 3.00lb 12.0x9.7x0.8in.
