Kerry Mills (1869 - 1948), born Frederick Allen Mills in Philadelphia, was an American ragtime composer and music publishing executive of popular music during the Tin Pan Alley era. His stylistically diverse music ranged from ragtime through cakewalk to marches, and he was most prolific between 1895 and 1918. Mills trained as a violinist and was head of the Violin Department of the University of Michigan School of Music when he began composing. In 1895, he moved to New York City and founded F.A. Mills Music Publisher, publishing both his work and that of others and producing popular pieces like "At a Georgia Camp Meeting" (1897), "Whistling Rufus" (1899), and "Red Wing" (1907). Andre De Takacs (1879/1880 - 1919) was an illustrator who immigrated from Budapest to the United States in 1901. De Takacs became established as an artist in New York, known for his work on sheet music covers, posters, postcards, and film company promotions. His illustrations often featured bold colors and he was able to create both realistic images as well as pleasingly abstract ones, which made him favorite in the Tin Pan Alley era.
