Es geht um einen der Sache… angemessenen Stil. Insofern ist auch keine abschließende Kategorisierung möglich: Ist das künstlerisch oder ist das dokumentarisch Die Fotografie hat sich verändert, sie ist befreit aus der rein dokumentarischen Arbeitsweise, auch wenn sie noch einen solchen Anspruch haben kann oder auf den ersten und vielleicht auch den zweiten Blick durchaus so erscheinen mag. Natürlich ist Feuerwache II ein Stück weit eine dokumentarische Arbeit, aber sie ist nie nur dokumentarisch. Denn in der Arbeit steckt ein stark narratives Element, ich möchte eine Geschichte oder die Geschichte zu einer Geschichte erzählen. Fotografie kann sich glücklicherweise heute von dem Zwang befreien, sich einordnen lassen zu müssen. Die Kategorisierung Dokumentation oder Kunst ist irrelevant geworden. Ich arbeite eher phänomenologisch. Ich versuche, mich Dingen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven anzunähern. Es kann sein, dass ich mit dieser Herangehensweise auch einmal scheitere, aber ich bin auch der Überzeugung, dass ich nicht zwangsläufig zu einem wie auch immer gearteten Ergebnis gelangen muss. Es sind die sinnlichen Wahrnehmungen, die eine Grundlage für die Darstellung bilden. Insofern geht es um Farben, Formen, Geräusche, Gerüche. Die Entscheidung künstlerisch oder dokumentarisch , wenn überhaupt, treffe ich von Fall zu Fall, wobei eben in den meisten meiner Arbeiten nach dieser überholten Kategorisierung ein Mix aus Dokumentation und einer freieren Arbeitsweise vorhanden wäre. Alfred Andersch hat einmal gesagt, Atmosphäre sei die Haut der Poesie . Dies beschreibt ziemlich genau, was ich empfinde, wenn ich eine Atmosphäre spüre und versuche, sie festzuhalten. Hermann Recknagel hat die Arbeit in der alten Mainzer Feuerwache vor und in ihrem Verschwinden festgehalten, hat Erfahrungen visualisiert, die sonst für immer verloren wären und allenfalls als Erinnerungen fortleben würden.
