"On the night of February 24, 1948 Dick Contino burst onto the American music scene when he won the Quarter Final Championship of the Horace Heidt-Phillip Morris "Talent Hunt." For the next nine months, the young Californian performed with the Heidt Orchestra and appeared on the maestor's Sunday radio program. By the time December 10, 1948 arrived, Contino had become a seasoned entertainer. That evening, he swept to victory in the Talent Hunt's "National Finals" and an entertainment legend was born. The ensuing months saw Dick appear in concerts from New York to Hollywood. He began his recording career and his long association with "The Ed Sullivan Show" (an association that would include a record 48 appearances on television's top-rated show). Wherever Contino appeared, lines filled with bobbysoxers who turned out in numbers that hadn't been seen since the heyday of a skinny young crooner named Frank Sinatra. Contino seemed destined to assume a place in the pantheon of America's entertainment stars. In 1951, however, Contino's world fell apart. Seeking to avoid military service, he was indicted as a "draft dodger," was tried, convicted, and sentenced to six months in jail and fined $10,000. Released from prison in January, 1952, Contino was drafted the following spring and received his basic training as an infantry rifleman. With the assistance of several friends, he was transferred to a Special Service Entertainment Unit that performed for troops all across Korea. It was at such a show that Contino met Bob Bove.
