If you research this book Salome by Oscar Wilde, illumintated by Valenti Angeloyou will find booksellers who say that the Heritage Press only published this book once. I have no idea if this is true and in fact doubt it because of the numerous copies offer in the online booktrade. I am still happy to offer it because the book itself is in very good condition and includes, laid-in, the newsletter of the Heritage Club, the Sandglass No. 5J. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¼ x 10 ½ inches, 51 double page) is bound in matte black boards with blind-stamped image of Salome on the cover and gilt titles on the spine and protected by a black paper covered cardboard slipcase (now quite battered). There are five color plates by the Artist, each one including some small portion illuminated in gold (?). In addition to the discussions of the book in the Sandglass, there is an extensive, interesting and informative Introduction (12 page) by Holbrook Jackson about the book and about Oscar Wilde. Condition: This book is in very good condition. I cannot say the same for the slipcase which is dry, brittle and split at base and with flaking to the finish in many places. The book itself is a bit dust-dulled but nothing extreme. Inside it is unmarked and the pages and plates and clean and bright and without toning or foxing. John Hoyer Updike (1932-2009), one of only three authors to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, is probably best known today for his "Rabbit" series. He often wrote about "everyday life", and this poem, originally published in 1958 (in "The Carpentered Hen"), touches upon the little things which make the city of San Francisco so memorable to so many. With four blue line-drawing vignettes by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books during a career which spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and The Book Club of California. He also printed books in extremely limited editions under the imprints of "The Golden Cross Press" and "The Press of Valenti Angelo".
