Chemise composée de deux planches de carton liées par des ficelles, cinq opuscules de papier kraft contenant des bifeuillets de papier épais blanc. L'année "1964" est inscrite au crayon sur le premier opuscule. Une des trois ficelles est manquante, sinon bel exemplaire. A l'exemplaire sont joints la carte de visite manuscrite de Gerhard Weber, une page découpée du journal bilingue français-allemand Pariser Kurier, et une carte postale représentant une oeuvre d'Ania Staritsky, mentionnée dans un article du journal. Il s'agit du "Carrefour des routes", oeuvre issue de la collaboration de Staritsky avec le poète Gérard Dresdner. * Le médium du livre est une constante dans l'uvre de cette artiste, qui quitte l'URSS pour la France à dix-sept ans, "puis s'installe à Bruxelles en 1932, où, après avoir complété sa formation à l'Institut supérieur des arts décoratifs de La Cambre, elle travaille comme illustratrice de livres, de journaux et de publicité." Original collage accompanied by the manuscript initials GW on the wrapper, 5 original engravings, and text presentation by Ania Staritsky. Wrapper composed of two cardboard boards joined by cords, five kraft paper booklets containing bifolia of thick white paper. The year "1964" is inscribed in pencil on the first booklet. One of the three cords is missing, otherwise a fine copy. Laid in are Gerhard Weber's autograph visiting card, a clipped page from the bilingual French-German newspaper Pariser Kurier, and a postcard reproducing a work by Ania Staritsky, mentioned in an article in the newspaper. This is "Carrefour des routes," a work resulting from Staritsky's collaboration with the poet Gérard Dresdner. * The book as medium is a constant throughout Staritsky's work. Having left the USSR for France at the age of seventeen, she "then settled in Brussels in 1932, where, after completing her training at the Institut supérieur des arts décoratifs in La Cambre, she worked as an illustrator for books, newspapers and advertising." Alongside her career as a painter and draughtswoman, she illustrated such classics as La Dame de pique by Alexander Pushkin (1947) and three volumes of Ronsard's Amours (1950). During the latter part of her life, she "perfected her mastery of collage, tirelessly engraved on zinc, copper, lithographic stones, and linoleum" (Jean-Claude Marcadé, ibid.), creating artworks mixing typography and imagery. The work is illustrated with original colour engravings by Ania Staritsky, who also devised the original layout of the book with the collaboration of Claude Nardin. A rare and very fine copy, complete with its brown full moiré cloth slipcase, slightly and marginally faded. Manuscript pencil signatures of Michel Butor and Ania Staritsky at the colophon. Our copy is enriched with two additional, distinct engravings and an original collage, all signed by Ania Staritsky. At the head of the work, an autograph inscription signed by Michel Butor to Claude Nardin. We also include an autograph note, dated and signed by Michel Butor, addressed to Ania Staritsky, concerning the work and its postal dispatch. The note is written on the verso of a Côtes de Provence wine label.
