Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Oversized hardcover, xxi + 415 pages, NOT ex-library. Weight over 1kg. Markings in green pen: a small number ("127,26") on the front blank endpaper; three words encircled in text on pages 37-38. Text on all other pages is clean, however, numerous pages have markings in side margins outside of text (mostly vertical lines of various lengths, small question marks, a single x mark, a couple of small arrows and exclamation marks; a single word written in the margin on page 24 and 37). Faint dusty marks on blank page 128 and on page edges externally. Issued without a dust jacket. -- A mixed-methods, 130-country analysis of how ethnic differentiation, class formation, and political institutions structure inequality - combining multivariate models, QCA, and historical-comparative case studies to develop a typology of ethnic stratification and concrete policy pathways to reduce ethno-class inequality. -- The book applies a Weberian framework to explain how class, status, and ethnic differentiation shape income inequality within countries. It argues that these inequalities can be reduced through policy. Part I employs cross-national statistical models on a newly compiled 130-country dataset to show that historical ethno-class exploitation - especially the legacies of slavery and colonial rule - is a stronger and more persistent driver of high inequality than heterogeneity per se. It also shows how political institutions - democracy, federalism, and welfare states - can mitigate disparities and specifies the conditions under which these levers are most effective. Part II develops a typology of ethnic stratification, from projects to preserve homogeneity (assimilation, selective immigration, secession) to explicit systems of domination and exploitation. Case studies include Sweden and Japan (distinct egalitarian trajectories), India (caste heterogeneity with moderate inequality), China and Eastern Europe (ethno-national cleavages under Communist rule), Latin America (color-based class structures, or pigmentocracies), post-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa (ethno-class regimes), and the long-run aftermaths of apartheid in South Africa and racialized segregation in the United States. The book also offers a focused analysis of Israel as a contemporary ethno-national state with rising inequality. Moving from diagnosis to prescription, it evaluates policy strategies to reduce ethno-class inequality: strengthening federal arrangements, empowering deprived groups through education and regional planning, and developing welfare and migration models suited to the Global South. -- This book contributes significantly to the fields of sociology, economics, and political science by offering a holistic framework for understanding global economic inequalities. The typology of ethnic stratification and the identification of historical legacies (for example, slavery and colonialism) as persistent drivers of inequality challenge simplistic narratives that attribute disparities solely to current economic policies or cultural differences. By highlighting successes in homogeneous societies (Sweden, Japan) and mixed outcomes in heterogeneous ones (India vs. Sub-Saharan Africa), Haller underscores the need for context-sensitive solutions rather than one-size-fits-all approaches. Moreover, the emphasis on political systems (democracy, federalism, welfare states) as inequality mitigators resonates with ongoing debates on the role of governance in development. The book's advocacy for empowering deprived groups through education and regional planning aligns with grassroots movements and critiques of top-down development aid. It is a landmark contribution for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners striving to dismantle systems of exploitation and exclusion.…
