So how and why could Anna May Wong then raise to stardom in a time when Orientals were faced with racism, but in spite of that, is not sufficiently remembered nowadays.

Both plays were written in a time when libertinism prevailed and male stereotypes like rakes and fops and female stereotypes like wives and virgins were popular. Needless to say, both plays not only deal with Restoration society but also with its problems, concerns, and difficulties at the time. And especially, Love for Love, which was written fairly at the end of the Restoration era, still is a conventional play in terms of being libertine-satirical but it already includes some features of sentimentalism. So it is not a postponement from libertinism to sentimentalism yet, but I want to argue in this essay that both plays are rather conventional libertine Restoration plays which include features of early sentimentalism.

Now you have to keep in mind that America was settled by British people but yet Americans now do not speak British English and then voted for their own way of speaking and pronouncing English. But how did that come It was simply impossible not to have a different variety of English in America since English was exposed to different external factors such as other existing languages and a new environment compared to English in England and Great Britain. Hence with the Declaration of Independence in 1776 as a political separation from the mother country a linguistic separation needed to follow to finally divorce the USA from England which was important for the Americans because they wanted to have their own national identity.

Here in this paper I would like to look at the female also a bit on male gaze in connection with the movies Network and Blow Up. This means I will also consider film theory of the 1970s and 1980s but I want to focus my insight on contemporary spectatorship.To do this, I will also give a short overview of historical findings and important authors and their theses and how their theses would work in this day and age. However, my intention is to argue that Laura Mulvey's thesis that the male gaze focuses on female objects only is partly outdated and that she left the female as a passive spectator, which is not true, because nowadays females are more active than males in terms of identification with their favourite stars on the screen. That identification can take on different levels starting with admiration because of looks, talent or taking them as role models which will furthermore end in consumption; may it be fashion, cosmetics or hairstyles.

Kennedy Institut), Veranstaltung: Nordamerikastudien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Melodrama war schon immer ein faszinierendes Genre, doch wieso eigentlich in den 1950er Jahren Wieso der Hollywoodfilm Das Melodrama war schon im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert ein sehr beliebtes Genre des Theaters. Damals schon hatte dieses Medium die Funktion, Sozialkritik zu äußern. Es wurden bereits damals brisante, volksnahe Themen behandelt und diskutiert, die bestimmte Bevölkerungsschichten ansprachen. Diese Funktion hat sich das Hollywoodkino zu eigen und zunutze gemacht. Warum wurde dieses Medium des Melodramas dazu benutzt, Sozialkritik an der Gesellschaft der 50er Jahre auszuüben Weil es sich an den äußeren Umständen der Zeit angepasst hatte. Vor allem den Umständen in den 1950er Jahren, einer Zeit, in der das Individuum gegen die Gesellschaft rebellierte, sich das Frauenbild änderte, Werte und Moral noch von größerer Bedeutung waren; haben dazu beigetragen, dass das Melodrama in dieser Zeit so beliebt war. Denn genau das war es, das in den Filmen reflektiert wurde. In dieser Arbeit werde ich mich hauptsächlich mit dem Film- Melodrama beschäftigen, allerdings werde ich mit einer Zeitreise in die Ursprünge oder auch Anfangszeit des Theater-Melodramas beginnen und einige wichtige Züge und Charakteristika dieses Genres aufdecken, die auch im Hollywoodfilm erkennbar sind. Die Filme, die hier besprochen werden, sind John M. Stahls Imitation of Life (1934) und dessen Remake aus dem Jahr 1959 von Douglas Sirk sowie Sirks Film All That Heaven Allows (1955) und Nicholas Rays Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Anhand dieser Filme werde ich verschiedene Punkte der Kritik an die Eisenhower-Gesellschaft der 1950er Jahre herausarbeiten sowie die filmischen Mittel, die die Gesellschaft anprangerte und in Frage stellte. Es wird sich herausstellen, dass das Melodrama ein Sprachrohr der damaligen Gesellschaft war und sich Gegner damit Gehör verschaffen wollten.
