"The commission for the Cowles Mathematics Building Expansion at the University of Utah offered a challenge architecturally as well as intellectually: to create an environment for mathematics in a building that consisted of small lob…bies on three floors and extensive corridors in an older structure. In a competition organized by the Utah Arts Council, the Mathematics faculty was exceptional in its range of vision. They asked for art that would identify the building as a 'House of Mathematics' and convey its wide-ranging influence. They also sought an environment that was a source of pleasure, intrigue and inspiration. It was a rare and imaginative statement from a building committee."
