Genital mycoplasma was found in 65% patients and distributed as 41% for Ureaplasma urealiticum and 4% for Mycoplasma hominis whilst there was co infection in 20% women. There was no relationship between genital Mycoplasmas and age group. In this study 57% had other organisms which included C. albicans 19%, G. vaginalis 35% and T. vaginalis 3%. Amongst the 65 women with genital mycoplasma, the highest coinfection was with G. vaginalis (33.8%). Antibiotic sensitivity showed Pristinamycine (PT) as the most sensitive antibiotic with 92% sensitivity and Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) as the most resistant with a sensitivity of 8%. There is a relationship between genital Mycoplasma infection and C. albicans, G. vaginalis and T vaginalis. Abstinence and the use of condoms should be encouraged. Information is also made available on the interaction between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) including the natural history of the coinfection. The current treatment regiment and preventive measures of hepatitis C virus infection are also well spelled out in this book. The book ends with a study that compares a rapid strip test, ELISA and PCR in the diagnosis of hepatitis C in HIV, with a case study of hospitals in Cameroon. This prompted us to investigate the prevalence of respiratory tract Aspergillus sp. in the sputum of patients suspected of pulmonary tuberculosis. Two hundred sputa samples were studied for Aspergillus sp. and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Analysis for Aspergillus sp. was done by direct microscopy and fungal culture on two sets of Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was analysed by the Auramine-phenol fluorochrome technique. Aspergillus sp were isolated from 30(15%) patients, M. tuberculosis was found in 27(13.5%) and a co infection of 9(4.5%) was observed. Aspergillosis is common in individuals suspected of pulmonary tuberculosis in Fako Division. Infectious bites are common all year round which places the entire population at risk of malaria infection. HIV-infected patients constitute one of the major at-risk groups, with infection with malaria being expectedly more severe.We then investigated the prevalence of malaria parasiteamia in people living with HIV attending the Military hospital Yaounde. We observed a low prevalence of 7%. This therefore undermines the importance of mapping out the distribution of the coinfection in the country as this will provide information which can help to put the situation under control.Despite the depletion of the human immune system caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, in line with our findings and observations, the prevalence of malaria is low in HIV positive individuals. The prevalence was not a subject of sex and age. This is an indication that all HIV patients are equally at risk of infection with malaria and preventive measures to control malaria infection in this group are a priority.…
