Children and adults are confronted and influenced by those stereotypes, most of the time internalize them and behave according to their gender roles. Men and women perform different roles which are based on nothing more than their biological gender. Although these roles cannot be referred to each individual, the majority of people live out their lives in accordance to these pervasive roles. To sum it up, gender is a central and 'organizing category in social life' (Warren 7).Women anthropologists from the 1920s up to the present time focused their research on Western women's issues and examined women's settings. Their result is that mainly the domestic sphere, child rearing, health and nutrition are the settings or the tasks ascribed to women. In part, this is - according to the anthropologists - a consequence of expectations associated with the society's home territory and with Western anthropologist's cultural assumptions. Additionally, the societies which were studied by these anthropologists were often highly gender-segregated and numerous roles and activities could be taken by one gender and were banned to the other (Warren 16).To put in other words, most societies are 'husband-centered' (Warren 14) and some of the societies studied 'to a degree even greater than is customary in Western Europe and America'. (ibid.)The novel 'Bastard Out of Carolina' written by Dorothy Allison deals with gender stereotypes and tells the story of the so called 'white trash'-girl Ruth 'Bone' Boatwright and her family. Allison critiques in the novel not only two of the most damaging bourgeois myths about 'white trash' - illegitimacy and incest - but also the ideology of motherhood emphasizing a socially constructed gender system that cuts across social classes (Baker).

Sixty Years later David Lean made a film based on Forster's novel, which was representative of a whole range of films of this decade dealing with the construction of Englishness and trying to revive the imperial or Edwardian past in a nostalgic and Anglo-centric manner (Nischik 301).The film is part of the so-called heritage industry thriving in Thatcher Britain and is supported by political orders and acts like the National Heritage Act of 1980 and 1983. In that time the political importance of Britain decreased and there were challenges to the national sovereignty and unity by the European integration process as well as disintegrative developments in Northern Ireland. Therefore the construction of traditional Englishness and of imperial dominance in the cultural format of quality films became one of Britain's most important export article (Nischik 302). But those national identities such as 'Englishness' are cultural constructions and symbolic self-representations which come to equate social facts. In the context of social and political integration, literary texts play an important and privileged role and complement the affirmative appeal of popular films produced for the cinema (Nischik 303).The novel A Passage to India avoids simplistic idealizations of Anglo-Indian relations and Englishness when constructing it and wants its readers to confront the truths about their inner selves and their relation to the world (Yarrow 1). Forster describes different worldviews in his novel without privileging one above another and lets his characters search for paths towards individual truths and an opening up of the deeper corners of consciousness (Yarrow 1).The Marabar Caves play an important role in the description of different worldviews and the individual truth which the characters try to find in the novel. They 'represent an area in which concentration can take place. A cavity. They were something to focus everything up: they were to engender an event like an egg' (Messenger 62). Therefore the Marabar Caves in A Passage to India can be seen as the heart of the novel, both literarily, structurally and symbolically (Messenger 62).

And you can't catch it from someone who hasn't got it himself' (Surkamp/Henseler 2).Although reading is important to develop language skills, the survey PISA 2001 showed that 42% of the German pupils do not think that reading is fun and 31% even think that it is a waste of time. When considering the significance of reading, this is a shocking result. Nevertheless, a reason for this attitude may be the lack of reading motivation among pupils. Developing reading literacy and enjoying reading require the motivation to read. In this context not only the lessons in the mother tongue, but also the teaching of foreign languages must establish this reading motivation and a reading culture. To prove my thesis, I will first give an overview of reasons for the regained belief that literary texts enrich the teaching of foreign languages and designate arguments for deal-ing with literature in class. In doing so, I will furthermore expose aims and functions of literary texts in the classroom and demonstrate developments and approaches in the teaching of literature. In the following part of my paper, I will have a closer look at the textbook 'Cornelsen G21 A6' and its unit 'Love Reading' which is about literature and reading. In analyzing this unit, I will examine if the aspects mentioned before have been considered and if the recommended approaches to literary texts have been implemented in this course book. At first the analysis of the unit will refer to its structure, the genres which are introduced and the novel 'Looking for Alaska' in particular. Afterwards I will study the tasks set in the unit and methods which were applied. Finally the analysis aims at comparing the learning objectives in the unit to the central standards of the 'Kernlehrplan English'. In the last part of my paper, I will summarize and evaluate my findings as well as discuss the actual significance of literature in the EFL classroom in reference to the fourth unit of Cornelsen G21 A6.

But the work of these two is very separate because bailiffs usually enforce court orders and warrants issued by the government departments and are allowed to take people s goods to sell it to pay what is owed (csa). In contrast to a bailiff a debt collector has no right to do that and is only a representative of a Debt Collection Agency (payplan). However, there are different types of bailiffs that must be distinguished and will be dealt with in one of the following paragraphs of this paper. If you are a creditor and have problems with a debtor or if you are a debtor and afraid of an arriving bailiff, you will find a lot of websites on the internet offering help and giving advice. This shows that there is an increasing awareness of bailiffs and since courtroom shows have experienced a remarkable revival in the mid-1990s and became a regular feature of daytime television, bailiffs are present on the TV screen, too (Versteegen 71).While examining the presentation of this occupation, I will demonstrate that bailiffs are shown in a contrary way in the media. To prove my thesis, I will firstly give a definition and an overview of the job and function of a bailiff, present the different types of bailiffs and will also deal with the walking possession agreement. In the second part of my paper I will have a look at two different presentations of Bailiffs in the media: First I will examine a debtor s proceed against a bailiff, which caught the attention of the media. In contrast to that I will have a look at the character of Petri Hawkins-Byrd, the popular bailiff of the American courtroom show Judge Judy and his depiction on the TV show. In the last part of my paper I will evaluate my findings and prove my thesis that the presentation of this occupation in the media differs. Finally I will assume the function of these distinct ways of presenting this occupation and will also refer to the two different genres of media in which the bailiffs are shown, namely on the one hand a real court case in newspapers and on the radio and on the other hand a TV courtroom series.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: New Orleans, language: English, abstract: The Princess and the Frog immediately captured the media's and critics' attention since the heroine and later princess, Tiana, is Disney's first African-American protagonist. Some scholars claim that the timely release of the film in the first year of Barack Obama's presidency renders The Princess and the Frog an appropriate marker of America's so-called 'new age' of racial harmony: While a black president resides in the White House, a black princess lives in the Disney castle. When the characters sing 'Dreams Do Come True in New Orleans' (Newman), the city - though accurately and authentically depicted - is presented as a dreamspace with racial harmony, contrary to the real New Orleans at that time. In this context, the peculiar absence of racial tension throughout the film might be an approach to overwrite the problematic position the city occupies in the minds of many Americans with a romantic fairy tale by Disney. Therefore it can be said that The Princess and the Frog serves as a tourist brochure for the city which makes viewers nostalgically look back.To prove my theses of how blackness is formed in The Princess and the Frog, I will have a closer look at the setting of the Disney-movie since New Orleans, which is often considered as a place of 'racial difference', plays an important role in the film's construction of blackness. At first I will give a brief overview of the city's colonial history before explaining the concept of Creolization and link this idea to New Orleans. In the following part of my paper, I will analyze the representation of blackness in Walt Disney's film The Princess and the Frog by on the one hand referring to the setting and its depiction and on the other hand taking into account Tiana, the first African American princess, and her illustration in the film. Due to limitations of space and since the portrayals of New Orleans and Tiana provide lots of interesting material for an analysis, the display of voodoo and the study of other characters in the film is omitted in this paper. Finally, in the conclusion I sum up my findings and elaborate on an issue, or respectively, answer a question which was often posed and discussed about after the release of the film: Does Disney neglect stereotypes in The Princess and the Frog or promote them 28 pp. Englisch.
