Ese vecino de Sade, sin embargo,quedó sepultado bajo la losa del tiempo y su obra nunca se incorporó a nuestragenealogía literaria; de hecho, apenas quedan seis copias de la edición originaldesamparadas en otras tantas bibliotecas. Esta versión en castellano es laprimera que se publica tras 220 años de purgatorio.Los bohemios aquí retratados son una tropa de escribidores filosofantes querecorren los campos de Champaña escoltados por sus barraganas y un asnocargado de manuscritos inéditos. Viven de la tierra (robando gallinas,básicamente), propinan interminables arengas filosóficas (a cada cual másinsensata), riñen y berrean como chiquillos, fornican en católica promiscuidad (sinexcluir al clero de sus calenturas) y sólo se detienen para engullir lo que vanafanando por el camino. Como el descubridor del texto afirma en la introducción,Los bohemios se mueve entre varios géneros, de modo que puede leerse almismo tiempo como un relato de aventuras, una novela picaresca, un roman àclef, una colección de ensayos filosóficos, un panfleto anticlerical, unaautobiografía y un opúsculo libertino. Estamos, pues, ante una muestra tanmagnífica como olvidada del mejor relato dieciochesco anclado en losmagisterios convergentes de Rabelais y Cervantes.Sobre Anne Gédéon Lafitte, marqués de Pelleport, dice lo siguiente un informepolicial: «Es hijo de un gentilhombre [?]. Ha sido expulsado de dos regimientos[?] y apresado cuatro o cinco veces [?] por atrocidades contra el honor. Secasó en Suiza, donde mantuvo una vida errante durante dos años. [?] Estudióen la Escuela Militar, pero no es lo mejor que ha salido de ella». A estos cargospodemos añadir que nació en 1754; que en Suiza fue preceptor de niñosburgueses y tuvo dos hijos; que hacia 1780 escapó a Londres para escribirferoces libelos contra la buena reputación de Francia; que entre 1784 y 1788residió en la Bastilla, donde coincidió con el marqués de Sade; que el 14 de juliode 1789 presenció el asalto a su antigua residencia e intentó salvar la vida delalcaide de Losme, cuya cabeza acabó paseada sobre una pica (episodioinmortalizado en un cuadro de Charles Thévenin); y que a partir de esamemorable fecha su rastro se vuelve incierto, aunque seguramente regresó aInglaterra como espía y emigró después a América para enmendar.
