Anneke Wills?s Self Portrait is the first volume of her autobiography, and it comes from that gloriously overstuffe…d stretch of British cultural life when theatre, television, coffee bars, Chelsea, satire, marriage, motherhood, art, scandal, youth and reinvention all seemed to be happening in the same smoky room. Many readers will arrive because Wills played Polly in Doctor Who , which is fair enough: British television has always been very good at turning actors into permanent national furniture. But this is not a simple ?I was in a famous programme, please admire the wallpaper? memoir. It is wider, sharper and more human than that. Wills writes about a life lived near the bright, unstable centre of things: acting, studios, friendships, lovers, family, the swinging sixties, and the strange condition of being young and visible in a culture that was busy congratulating itself on becoming modern. The decade has been polished in hindsight until it looks like one long boutique window full of miniskirts, music and charming irresponsibility. Self Portrait is more interesting because it remembers that people actually had to live through it. There were babies, marriages, mistakes, ambitions, betrayals, bills, rooms, choices, and the ordinary emotional weather that no amount of fashionable eyeliner can entirely keep out. The title is nicely exact. A self portrait is not a mugshot, not a publicity still, and not the version other people would find convenient. It is an attempt to look back at the self without letting nostalgia do all the lighting. Wills gives us the actress, yes, but also the wife, mother, daughter, friend, traveller-through-chaos, and young woman trying to remain intact while life keeps handing her new roles before she has finished understanding the old ones. There is a lovely irony in a memoir by someone associated with time travel being so firmly about memory. Television preserves people in little glowing capsules: always young, always recognisable, always stepping out of the same scene. Life, rude thing, refuses to do the same. It moves on, changes the cast, loses the script, and expects everyone to improvise. Wills?s book seems to understand this deeply. It is not just about what happened, but what it felt like to be carried through it while the future was busy pretending to be liberation. For Doctor Who fans, there is the pleasure of seeing a familiar figure step away from the console and into her own voice. For readers of memoir, there is something better than celebrity gossip: a candid, reflective, sometimes painful, sometimes funny account of a woman making sense of a complicated life in public and private. The glamour is there, but it has not been allowed to bully the truth. This Hirst Books copy is in As New condition, which is almost indecently fresh for a memoir of the sixties, a decade that generally looks as though it should arrive smelling faintly of coffee, cigarette smoke and poor decisions. Crappy Old Books offers it for Doctor Who people, sixties people, theatre and television people, memoir people, and anyone who enjoys the rare pleasure of a public figure reclaiming the mirror and deciding where the light should fall.

There are memoirs in which a famous person remembers the famous bits, names the famous people, arranges the photographs, and emerges looking tastefully backlit by destiny. Anneke Wills, inconveniently, seems to have written the other sort: the one where life keeps happening after the glamorous chap…ters, and not always with the courtesy to be easily summarised. Naked is the second volume of Wills?s autobiography, and the title is doing more than a little work. This is not naked in the coy publicity sense, where someone has removed a scarf and called it emotional bravery. It is naked as in exposed, candid, funny, bruised, roaming, spiritually curious, occasionally bewildered, and determined not to make a neat little television anecdote out of a large, untidy life. Many readers will arrive because of Doctor Who , where Wills played Polly and became part of that strange national cupboard in which Britain stores actors, monsters, scarves, childhood memories and arguments about canon. But Naked is not simply ?what Polly did next,? thank heavens. It is the story of a woman leaving the bright machinery of television and moving into a much less scripted existence: rural life, family life, reinvention, travel, spiritual searching, unconventional relationships, artists, gardens, grief, odd communities, strange turns, and the general discovery that escaping show business does not necessarily mean escaping drama. Life, unlike television, does not always wait for its cue. There is something wonderfully late-20th-century about the journey here: Norfolk, India, Rajneesh, Canada, California, design, gardening, marriages, bereavement, returns, departures, and the repeated human mistake of thinking that a change of scenery might finally persuade the self to behave. Wills writes as someone who has been through enough transformations to know that reinvention is rarely tidy. Sometimes it looks like liberation. Sometimes it looks like packing badly and hoping the next country has answers. The charm of the book is that it appears to understand the comic and the tragic as close relatives who keep borrowing each other?s clothes. Wills has lived among performers, seekers, lovers, children, losses, landscapes and assorted magnificent complications, and she does not seem interested in smoothing the lot into celebrity wallpaper. The result is a memoir with pulse: intimate, wandering, wounded, generous, and full of the peculiar dignity of someone still becoming herself long after the public thought it had already decided who she was. There is also the pleasing irony that a book called Naked arrives as a paperback object, fully clothed in cover, spine, ISBN and all the other modest garments of publishing. But inside it is much less upholstered. It is about taking off roles: actress, wife, mother, icon, exile, disciple, survivor, returnee. Some roles are shed willingly, some are torn away, and some hang about like old costumes that no longer fit but still smell faintly of the stage. This Hirst Books copy is in Good condition, which feels about right for a memoir of survival, reinvention and emotional weather. It has lived a little, as decent books should, but remains perfectly ready to go on being handled, opened, argued with and read by someone curious enough to follow Wills beyond the famous doorway. Crappy Old Books offers it for Doctor Who fans with broader sympathies, memoir readers, seekers, theatre-and-television people, and anyone who suspects that the most interesting part of a life often begins after the bit everyone recognises.
