Published by Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver, Canada, 1987. First Canadian Edition. 4to up to 12" tall; 192pp. Black cloth boards with silver spine titles. Two…small and very light scratches to boards and otherwise volume is in fine condition. Unclipped jacket has light inside toning to top edge and an inside soil spot. Held captive as a slave after his crew was killed, John R. Jewitt experienced adventure and hardship as he learned about the native life of Nootka Sound. This new edition contains nearly 300 annotations and 200 drawings for the book by Hilary Stewart. During three years of research, Stewart tracked down the English captive's descendants, John Rodgers Jewitt IV, V and VI, living in the United States, and Northwest Indians still bearing the name Maquinna. Jewitt's journal which was first published in 1815. Hilary Stewart (1924-2014) was an award-winning author best known for her books on Northwest Coast First Nations cultures. She had also been involved in teaching outdoor education and wilderness survival courses for many years, as well as studying the ethnobotany of the coast First Nations, and had extensive practical experience in the use of plants. She lived on Quadra Island in British Columbia.

First Edition. Stewart was born in Dunfermline on 8 July 1856, and died in Glasgow on 27 Aug 1947 aged 91. For over 25 years he was Secretary and Organiser of the Independent Labour Party in Scotland. He also published The Worker, a monthly Socialist Journal for Fife and Clackmannan from Bruce Street, Dunfermline, in 1898-1900.…With the signature of Douglas Young, political activist and nationalist to the front pastedown. Also annotated througout, in what appears to be Young's hand in pencil with comments particularly on national identity etc. Hard boards, VG.
