Le recit condamnerait ainsi la puissance et l'hybris de ces grandes civilisations et la dispersion et la confusion subsequentes manifesteraient la punition divine. Le but de cet ouvrage est de revisiter une telle hypothese, d'analyser le texte biblique a la lumiere des differents motifs litteraires communs a la litterature mesopotamienne, particulierement celui de "la tete dans le ciel" (Gn 11,4), et de montrer les fonctions que ces motifs occupent dans leurs differents contextes. Cette analyse comparative permet de souligner le "repensement" ideologique, theologique mais egalement anthropologique, qui s'effectue dans le recit qui clot l'histoire des origines et ouvre celle des patriarches.
