Le dessinateur, pour les fabriques d'étoffes d'or, d'argent et de soie, avec la traduction de six tables raisonnées tirées de 'Abecedario Pittorico, imprimé à Naples en 1733. Paris, Sébastien Jorry, Bauche et Brocas, 1765.8vo. xlviii + 218 + [5 + 1blank]p including chapter index, errata leaf & royal privilege. Engraved dedicatory arms on page 3; five fullpage woodcuts of floral design; 9 large ornamental engravings; marbled endpapers. 19th century quarter calf, marbled boards; gilt morocco label, spine richly gilt. First edition of what is considered the first French practical handbook for designers and manufacturers of luxury fabrics, especially silk. Compiled for the benefit of young artists, the guide is illustrated with 5 striking full-page woodcuts with floral embroidery designs suitable for various fabrics (satin, damask, silver & gold fabrics, velvet, silk, cotton & moire). Joubert de l Hiberderie (1715-1770), formerly chief-designer to Claude Pernon in Lyon dedicates his work to his friend Christophe de Freminville, treasurer general of Les Invalides. He advises the artist to study the human figure, flowers and ornamental designs by the great masters; In chapter XV, pp86 - 118 he encourages frequent visits to Paris describing all a designer should see, the great silk workshops, museums, palaces, the workshops of flower painters, the royal tapestry and porcelain factories, the royal gardens, the statuary of the boulevards, the church es and the opera including theatre, ballet and pantomimes; he draws attention to certain galleries for their old masters, and talks of theatres from the point of view of decoration. ( Comme l'étoffe est susceptible de divers petits agréments étrangers aux fleurs et aux fruits, qui sont l'essence de l'étoffe du goût, il est bon et même indispensable de voir les couturières et même les faiseuses de modes; on trouve chez elles mille petites choses destinées à embellir l'étoffe, et qui se marient parfaitement bien avec les dessins ); beginning at p119 is added a translation of sections of the Abecedario Pittorico, an Italian art dictionary written by Pelegrino Antonio Orlandi (1660-1727) comprising a bibliography of art, architecture and artists; the work concludes with advice to young painters, the care and repair of paintings, and finally a section on fresco painting. In his preface Joubert praises several outstanding artists connected to the Lyon manufacture among the 55 active designers: [Pierre de] Monlong (1712-89), [Jean] Revel (1683-1751), who produced chinoiserie silk designs in early rococo design, Courtois, the first to introduce shaded tones, and [Pierre] Ringuet (1698-1771), son of an architect working freelance for different workshops, described by Joubert as a man of great genius and a great de signer who was the first to introduce the design of natural flowers on cloth ; he also mentions Charles Le Brun (1619-90), decorator, designer and graphic artist. On p xix the author acknowledges his debt to the [Jean-Jacques] Bachelier (1724-1806), one of the most influential flower painters of the day, for teaching him over 8 months how to make detailed drawings of plants. In chapter xiv, page 81, Joubert makes an extended laudatory reference to [John] Badger, an English waterer ( moireur ) working in Lyon nous avons eu a Lyon le sieur Badjer, qui nous a aporté d Angleterre le cylindre merveilleux, & l apprêt avec lequel il fait un gros-de-tours une veritable glace , lorsqu on lui donne une étoffe fabriquées avec des belles matieres. (we had in Lyons Mr Badjer, who brought us from England the marvelous cylinder, and the finish with which he makes a real mirror, when given a fabric made with beautiful materials.) Joubert specialized in brocaded watered silks with uneven flowery patterns to which he de votes the longest chapter of his book he invented moëre broché.
