Sonst gut und sauber. - Vorrede: Mit vorliegender Arbeit hoffe ich eine Lücke in der landwirtschaftlichen Literatur auszufüllen, nachdem bis nunzu Niemand den Versuch gemacht hat, eine vollständige Geschichte der Thierzucht der Oeifentlichkeit zu übergeben. Die Thierzucht war im Alterthum auf das innigste mit der Vete- rinärmedicin verbunden, weshalb eine Scheidung dieser Disciplinen wohl schwer durchzuführen wäre, schon deshalb nicht, da die landwirtschaftlichen Schriftsteller des Altertums gerade so in der Veterinärmedicin, wie die Thierärzte in der Thierzucht (besonders in der Pferdezucht) bewandert waren. Aus diesem Grunde fand ich es für angezeigt, die Geschichte beider Disciplinen unter Einem abzuhandeln. Hiebei habe ich mich nicht blos an die gewöhnliche Darstellungsweise gehalten, die Lebensgeschichte und die literarische Thätigkeit einzelner Autoren chronologisch hervorzuheben, sondern ich habe versucht, die thierzüchterischen und tierärztlichen Kenntnisse des Altertums in dem Lichte darzustellen, wie sie einstens vor Jahrtausenden gelehrt wurden. Aus dem Vergleiche der modernen Kenntnisse über Thierzucht und Thiermedicin mit jenen, die ein gebildeter Landwirt und Thierarzt des Altertums wusste, ergibt sich ein höchst lehrreiches Studium auf welch' verhältnissmässig hohe Stufe bereits die Alten beide Disciplinen gebracht und welch' geringe Fortschritte wir seit Jahrtausenden zu verzeichnen haben. Als Quellen zur Bearbeitung dieses Werkes dienten mir die Werke alter Autoren, die in den öffentlichen Bibliotheken zum grössten Theil vorhanden sind; vor Allem aber muss ich der k. k. Hofbibliothek in Wien gedenken, wo mir Gelegenheit geboten wurde, in die seltenen Manuscripte und Originalwerke alter Autoren Einsicht zu nehmen. Zum Schluss sei noch erwähnt, dass die Geschichte der Thierzucht und Thiermedicin grösstentheils in der hier verfassten Form in losen Aufsätzen bereits in der österr.
