Es ist schmerzlich, gratulieren zu sollen zu etwas, das man so sehr bedauert. Doch da muß das eigene Ich weichen; und daß es der Himmel so gestal…ten möge, daß mein so edles Künstlerpaar äußerst glücklich sich fühlen mögen in Bremen, das ist mein heißester Wunsch, meine innigste Gratulation! [.]" ("I was told that your ladyship and you are leaving Vienna. It's painful to congratulate one for something that you feel very sorry about. But one's own self-interest has to give way; and may heaven make it so that my noble and artistic couple will be extremely happy in Bremen, that is my fondest wish [.]"). - On lined paper, fold creases, lower edge tearing at crease, light spotting. Together with a photograph of Bruckner on his deathbed, and a folder of correspondence regarding purchase of the letter in 1971, all contained in a modern blue card portfolio. - J. A. Stargardt, direct sale, 1971 (correspondence). From the estate of Maestro Hans Bauer (1935-2023), a world-renowned Austrian/Canadian conductor and accomplished violinist who formed a small but choice collection of musical autographs. His sister Hertha Bauer (1919-96), who worked at H.P. Kraus for more than 25 years, assisted him forming this collection.

Large 4to. 3 pp. on bifolium. To his friend Rudolf Weinwurm, conductor at the Wiener Singakademie, about the premiere of his Mass No. 1 in d minor performed at the Linz cathedral and the Redoutensaal, expressing his surprise that the latter was packed with listeners despite the seriousness of his composition, and mentioning that… his concert was attended by Joseph, Archduke of Austria. He intends to have a fair copy of the full score prepared, which he would like to send to Weinwurm for him to deliver to the critic Eduard Hanslick and to the composer and conductor Johann Herbeck, hoping the latter might agree to have it performed at the Vienna Musikverein, as a performance in the church would require too much rehearsal: "Meine Messe wurde am 20. Nov. im Dom u. am 18. Dez. als Concert spirituel im Redoutensaal aufgeführt durch Veranstaltung mehrerer Musikfreunde. Daß letzteres so außerordentlich besucht, ja überfüllt war sei Dir als Beweis, wie in der Kirche angesprochen hat, was mich um so mehr wundert, da die Composition sehr ernst u. sehr frei gehalten ist. Ich sende Dir 1 Blatt v. Abendbothen - u. 1 von der Linzerzeitung, die Gamon schreibt - er macht ein Langes u. Breites - bringt erst nach langen Pausen wieder eine Nummer, so daß er leider jetzt noch nicht fertig ist [.] Ich wartete immer auf dieß Fertigwerden mit dem Schreiben an Dich; kann aber jetzt nimmer länger meinem liebsten u. wärmsten Freunde auf der Welt meine Mittheilungen verzögern. Erzherzog Josef besuchte auch mein Conzert [.] Ich lasse jetzt noch die Partitur rein schreiben. Glaubst Du nicht, daß ich selbe später Hanslik u. Herbek durch Dich senden soll. Denn in der Kirche glaube ich fordert sie zu viel Proben; denn solche müßten selbst bei den tüchtigsten Musikern der Residenz sein. Und welcher Chorregent würde sich dieß gefallen lassen? Meine am besten wäre es, wenns Herbek für würdig fände, daß es einmal in einem Musikvereins-Conzerte als eine Abtheilung gebracht würde. (Oder Dessof?) wenns nicht ginge. Oder Krenn - doch wer hörte sie dort? Wie meinst Du. Ich hoffe Dich bald zu sprechen; denn ich will zur 9 Simphonie u. zum Conzert der Phylharmoniker hinabreisen. Weiß nicht wann sie sein wird. Bitte Dich - schreib mirs [.]". - The mass, which was highly successful both with the critics and the audience, was a breakthrough for Bruckner as a composer.
