Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. An examination of the use of modernism in the twentieth-century battle for US hegemony, through the activities of the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom. An examination of the use of modernism in the twentieth-century battle for US hegemony, through the activities of the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom.Parapolitics confronts the contemporary fate of intellectual autonomy and artistic freedom by revisiting the use of modernism in the twentieth-century battle for US hegemony. It builds on a major exhibition at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (2017-18) that took as its starting point the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF)-an organization covertly funded by the Central Intelligence Agency in order to steer the Left away from its remaining commitment to communism. Paying particular attention to CCF activities in the non-European world during a period of decolonization and the Civil Rights Movement, Parapolitics assembles archival documentation from five continents alongside a selection of historical artworks to explore the context in which artists negotiated the framing and meaning of their work. A rich reference book for future researchers and everybody interested in the legacy of modernism, the publication also presents more than thirty newly commissioned contributions by contemporary artists and scholars. Softcover. Condizione: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. This collection of essays features a dynamic discussion among feminist thinkers centered on the filmic fate of Jugoslava, the protagonist in Zelimir Zilnik's Early Works (1968). The narrative follows Jugoslava as she abandons her lumpenproletariat family to lead a group of vagabonds after the failed 1968 student movement in Socialist Yugoslavia. They journey to the countryside to share the teachings of Marx and Engels with local peasants, aiming to empower village women through lessons on contraception. However, their revolutionary efforts backfire, leading to violence against the group, culminating in a harrowing attack on Jugoslava. Her fervent desire for emancipation ultimately results in her punishment, depicted through the film's allegorical reflexivity. In the final scene, male comrades pursue her across desolate fields, culminating in her tragic death by gunfire and fire. As a canonical work within the Yugoslav New Film movement, Early Works challenges bureaucratic state socialism but has received limited attention regarding its gendered portrayal of revolutionary action and feminist critique. This volume is part of Antonia Majaca's ongoing project, Feminist Takes, which explores the intersection of Non-Western cinema with feminist theory, reflecting on the film's significance from diverse feminist perspectives.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Incomputable Earth: Technology and the Anthropocene Hypothesis challenges the dominant narrative that positions technological solutions as the primary response to ecological crisis. This open access collection argues that climate breakdown represents an irreducibly incomputable problem that cannot be resolved through algorithmic optimization or cybernetic planetary management. Radically interrogating the political epistemology underlying the Anthropocene hypothesis against the backdrop of new regimes of algorithmic classification and prediction, this volume addresses the crucial need to rethink the meaning and inter-relationality of human, nature, and technology. Drawing on feminist science studies, decolonial epistemologies, and historical materialist analysis, the contributors examine how computational frameworks transform Earths complex relationships into extractable data, perpetuating the very logics that created planetary crisis.Examining new forms of subjectivity and resistance, this timely volume provides both rigorous critique of technoscientific planetary governance and speculative horizons for collective response to climate breakdownoffering a blueprint for reclaiming abstraction from computational capture while centering radically transformed ways of knowing and being human. This book is available open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on It is funded by The Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Investigating the link between environmental breakdown and the increasing development of digital technologies, this is a vital intervention into what this means for our social, political, and planetary future. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
