Quarto, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling and detailing to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, gilt turn…-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, illustrated throughout. Boldly signed by illustrator Roger Duvoisin on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1,500 numbered copies, this is number 116. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the gilt turn-ins of the rear panel and the gilt ruling to the top right corner of the front panel. Translated out of the Spanish by Martin Armstrong. Introduction by Gerald Brenan. Illustrated by Roger Duvoisin. The Three-Cornered Hat by Pedro Antonio de Alarcà n is a satirical novella first published in 1874 that exemplifies the Spanish costumbrista tradition, blending regional color with social critique. Set in Andalusia, the story humorously portrays the failed seduction attempts of a corrupt magistrate (the corregidor) toward a millerâs wife, unfolding as a tale of mistaken identity and poetic justice. Drawing on folkloric motifs and comedic archetypes, Alarcà n uses lighthearted narrative and ironic tone to critique institutional hypocrisy and class pretensions.
