Sinopsis: Antonio Rafael Mengs (1728-1779), artista de origen alemán, ha pasado a la posteridad como el pintor filósofo por los dos campos en que realizó su labor teórico-práctica. Nuestra misión en esta presentación es analizar su trabajo dentro de la Teoría del Arte del siglo XVIII y delimitar el lugar que ocupó dentro de ella en este período histórico en el que nació la Estética como disciplina autónoma. Su vida se desarrolló alrededor de tres Cortes europeas; la primera fue Dresde, donde se formó dentro de la tradición rococó, que era el estilo imperante en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, fue en esta Corte donde comenzaba a introducirse lentamente la Ilustración, en la que empezó a tomar contacto con la Antigüedad grecorromana, sus escritos y sus obras. Para profundizar sobre estos temas clásicos, tiene lugar su traslado a Roma; es en esta ciudad donde conoce, de primera mano, el impacto arqueológico y la efervescencia de los círculos eruditos, conformando sus ideas y su pintura hasta el final de sus días bajos los parámetros del Clasicismo. En Roma será figura fundamental para la formación del estilo Neoclásico y formó parte de la pléyade de artistas que con muy diferentes orígenes difundieron la doctrina del Bello Ideal por toda Europa. De todos es conocido el papel jugado por Roma, hacia la mitad del siglo, como capital iniciática del nuevo estilo representativo de la Ilustración y Mengs pronto tuvo contactos con los cuatro círculos más representativos del mundo neoclásico: viajeros, eruditos y filósofos, arqueólogos y artistas, en todos ellos participó ocupando un lugar destacado como pintor y como escritor en el mundo de la Antigüedad clásica. La última parte de su vida transcurrió en España contratado por Carlos III, para pintar en las numerosas obras reales. España, se sumó a esta corriente cultural internacional gracias al cambio monárquico que tuvo lugar a primeros del siglo XVIII.…
