They were described as "spirited tales [whose purpose was] to convey in a realistic way the wonder…ful advance in land & sea locomotion & to interest the boy of the present in the hope that he may be a factor in aiding the marvelous development that is coming in the future." First published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1910, this is a later printing of that First Edition, listing to book #5 in front matter, but to book #27 in rear. In 216 pages & 14 pages of ads for other children's' series in rear, with a glossy frontispiece, this thick 12mo has the tan cloth-covered boards with four-panel illustration around a center circle with title to front cover. Condition is Fair-Good: generally quite clean with the occasional spot or smudge. Binding straight & strong, but cracked at title page, hinges secure. Pages creamy white with light, age-appropriate tanning, heavier around edges, but completely unmarked save for former owner's name inside front cover. Exterior edges & corners show bumping & rubbing, with many small spots/patches of silverfish damage to both covers. NO DJ (missing). This is the sixth Tom Swift adventure, originally copyright 1911, but this is a "Very-good" 1929 printing in a good dust jacket missing bottom inch-and-a-half of jacket spine. This book lists 31 Tom Swift t…itles (through "His Talking Pictures" (1928) to jacket front flap, but 32 through "His House on Wheels" (1929) to internal ads at rear. We count 11 "Radio Boys" through "Aiding the Snowbound" (1928) to jacket rear flap; jacket rear panel and internal ads both list seven Don Sturdys through "Among the Gorillas" (1927.) We'll presume a publication date of 1929. Unfortunately, it seems to have proven logistically impossible to haul along the always amusing "colored man" Eradicate Sampson and his recalcitrant mule to Earthquake Island, but Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) -- of Uncle Wiggily fame and here writing under the Appleton house name of the Stratemeyer Syndicate -- does manage to give him and the trusty "Boomerang" a brief introductory comic turn, delivering a telegram. Alas, no sign of Koku, the superstitious Argentine giant. 211 pp. Reduced from $37. Illustrations by H. Richard Boehm (illustratore).

An exceptionally nice copy of a scarcer, later title (#36) in the original Tom Swift series, which was comprised of 40 volumes written under the pseudonym Victor Appleton (actually Howard Roger Garis) published 1910-1941. They were described as…"spirited tales [whose purpose was] to convey in a realistic way the wonderful advance in land & sea locomotion & to interest the boy of the present in the hope that he may be a factor in aiding the marvelous development that is coming in the future." First published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1933, this is a slightly later printing (listing to next title on front flap, "Sky Train" on rear) of the First Edition from Whitman (#2160), in 217 pages. Thick small octavo has light gray-khaki cloth-covered boards lettered in black to front & spine. Condition is VG+: very clean with light scattered foxing to external page edges only. Binding straight & strong with a barely noticeable rightward lean; hinges intact, pages creamy white & unmarked. Edges & corners crisp with just a tad of rubbing, no rubbing or bumping.
