"I have received and laid before my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty you letters dated to the 11th of Nov. last numbered from 202 to 208 inclusive." A brief letter signed Jn. Barrow, Admiralty, January…21, 1836, by the English statesman who promoted Arctic exploration. The letter is addressed to Rear Admiral G. E. [Graham Eden] Hamond in South America, who made a name for himself in the Napoleonic Wars; he was later appointed Admiral of the Fleet.Barrow's role in launching the voyages of John Ross, William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, John Franklin and others was sufficient for those explorers to name multiple geographic features after him, among them Cape Barrow, Point Barrow and the Barrow Strait, etc. The writing pen provided in the last photo indicates size of paper. Now housed in a clear, archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. Signed.
