Arlene Young is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Manitoba. The edition includes the annotated text of The Odd Women, a critical introduction, a note on the text, a George Gissing chronology, and multiple appendices of historical documents on the "woman question" and the sociology of work in the 1890s. The Gissing Journal called this edition "especially welcome" and said it "deserves to become the text of choice for teachers"; Stephen Arata of the University of Virginia praised Young's work as "the definitive guide to Gissing's novel." In Gissing's story, Virginia Madden and her two sisters are confronted upon the death of their father with sudden impoverishment. Without training for employment, and desperate to maintain middle-class respectability, they face a daunting struggle. In Rhoda Nunn, a strong feminist, Gissing presents a powerful character who draws attention overtly to the issues behind the novel. The Odd Women is one of the most important social novels of the late nineteenth century — and when it comes to the complexities of everyday life in late-Victorian London, there is no better guide than Gissing. The Broadview edition, praised as the definitive scholarly text of the novel, includes rich contextual apparatus — historical documents on women's employment, the marriage question, and the emerging feminist movement — making it the standard university course edition. A near-fine copy, completely clean and unmarked, of a heavily assigned course text in outstanding condition.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. "As the door was thrust open, I heard, as in a dream, the voice of Neal Larrard-calm and cool as ever-dictating to me; mechanically, my fingers touched the keys, and I began to type. While I did so, I felt that fearful dead thing pressing against my knees, and felt also the muzzle of the revolver hard against my side."First published in 1903, The Girl Behind the Keys is a delightful example of early detective fiction in which Bella Thorn, a savvy young typist, foils the nefarious plans of her employer, a confidence man who exploits the hopes and fears infusing the popular imagination. As Arlene Young's critical introduction demonstrates, the story unites many of the cultural and literary motifs marking the dawn of the twentieth century, when the Victorian era was giving way to modernity.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. George Gissing's The Odd Women dramatizes key issues relating to class and gender in late-Victorian culture: the changing relationship between the sexes, the social impact of 'odd' or 'redundant' women, the cultural impact of 'the new woman,' and the opportunities for and conditions of employment in the expanding service sector of the economy. At the heart of these issues as many late Victorians saw them was a problem of the imbalance in the ratio of men to women in the population. There were more females than males, which meant that more and more women would be left unmarried; they would be 'odd' or 'redundant,' and would be forced to be independent and to find work to support themselves. In the Broadview edition, Gissing's text is carefully annotated and accompanied by a range of documents from the period that help to lay out the context in which the book was written. In Gissing's story, Virginia Madden and her two sisters are confronted upon the death of their father with sudden impoverishment. Without training for employment, and desperate to maintain middle-class respectability, they face a daunting struggle. In Rhoda Nunn, a strong feminist, Gissing also presents a strong character who draws attention overtly to the issues behind the novel.
