The edition includes the annotated text of The Odd Women, a critical introduction, a note on the text, a George Gissing chronology, and multiple appendices of historical documents on the "woman question" and the sociology of work in the 1890s. The Gissing Journal called this edition "especially welcome" and said it "deserves to become the text of choice for teachers"; Stephen Arata of the University of Virginia praised Young's work as "the definitive guide to Gissing's novel." In Gissing's story, Virginia Madden and her two sisters are confronted upon the death of their father with sudden impoverishment. Without training for employment, and desperate to maintain middle-class respectability, they face a daunting struggle. In Rhoda Nunn, a strong feminist, Gissing presents a powerful character who draws attention overtly to the issues behind the novel. The Odd Women is one of the most important social novels of the late nineteenth century ? and when it comes to the complexities of everyday life in late-Victorian London, there is no better guide than Gissing. The Broadview edition, praised as the definitive scholarly text of the novel, includes rich contextual apparatus ? historical documents on women's employment, the marriage question, and the emerging feminist movement ? making it the standard university course edition.
