The standards a translator has to meet these days are high and it is therefore hard to take as a coincidence that The Great Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald's most famous work, has been translated into German three times up to now.This remarkable number of translations for a book written not even a century ago might have something to do with the expectations the translator has to satisfy and which tend to be quite exalted when a lot of readers, who are not familiar with the language of the original work, and many publishers, who are aware of the fact that the translated work often sells better than the original, await its translation eagerly.Once the translation is published, the question of the authenticity, of how much of the author the translated book still contains, is a common problem especially in the critique and the feuilleton but also among a books major recipients, the common readers. Everybody that ever had the chance to have a thorough talk with a foreigner about a literary work known to both sides might have come across the phenomenon that certain aspects of that book were perceived in different ways - maybe the irony of a main character suddenly bordered sarcasm, maybe his felicitous language did not sound eloquent at all or maybe the character's whole appearance was bathed in a slightly different light.The aim of this term paper is to analyse if there are such differences between two versions of The Great Gatsby, furthermore if and to which extent they can influence the perception of a character and finally to analyse how such aberrations can come into existence.

Relevant parts of Hari Kunzru's novel 'White Tears' will be analyzed in order to understand the motivations and intentions that the two white twenty somethings have in their respective approaches to music that was made before they were born and to a subculture they never participated in due to their social backgrounds. The conclusion of this term paper then answers the following question: Was Carter right to reject the white rapper's business proposal Especially in a society like the United States with its long history of racial and cultural contacts and clashes, the appropriation of items from different cultural backgrounds is a strongly contested issue. The intensity of recent mainstream debates concerning the professional sport franchises of the Cleveland Indians or the Washington Redskins and their respective marketing of Native American culture is proof of that. When cultural appropriation is used as a vehicle of capitalism, it becomes debatable. Hari Kunzru's novel 'White Tears', published in 2017, deals with exactly these topics when portraying the business ventures of two young white music producers and their shared search for vintage sound in modern day New York City. In an early scene of the book, Seth and Carter, the producer duo, meet with representatives of a major label and their artist, a famous white rapper. Having heard of their vast archives of rare vintage sounds and their classic methods of production, the mainstream artists offers them the opportunity to work on his newest project, a tribute to all African-American music that was recorded prior to his birth in the Nineties. When Carter dismisses the project on the grounds of false cultural appropriation, he leaves his business partner as confused as the reader of the novel, since there is no further explanation offered and the plot continues.

On the metaphorical potential of such groups, Kövecses noted thatSubcultures develop their own metaphors, and these metaphors may define the group. There is ofcourse no subculture that defines itself through an entirely new set of metaphors, but some of themetaphors members use may be new relative to the mainstream (Kövecses 2009: 286f).And this might be especially true for the subculture of Hip Hop with its most importantmanifestation being rap music. Despite the fact that the genre is in existence since the Seventies,linguistic studies in this field are still rare, and investigations into the metaphorical inventory of rapmusic literally not existent. A first and important step into that direction has been undertaken byScott Crossley, whose study shows the linguistic potential of rap music as well as its variety ofmetaphors:As a product of a historically oral culture that embodies familiar metaphorical traits [.], AfricanAmerican rap music is especially rich in metaphoric language. Its roots, along with other AfricanAmerican linguistic traditions (including signifying, the dozens, and narrativizing), give rap music itsexceptional linguistic variety (Crossley 2005: 503).The present term paper will continue Crossley's research on metaphorical conceptions in rap musicby illustrating further conceptual metaphors, but it also likes to develop it into a new direction byincluding German rap music as well. The relationship between American and German rap music isespecially interesting because it is coined by a linguistic impact that is by far not as strong on amore general level. Certain aspects of this impact have already been laid down in earlier papers1,and it will be most rewarding to explore its cognitive dimensions as well.In the analysis three metaphorical concepts will be examined. They are illustrated with thehelp of similar conceptions from everyday language and from an exemplary rap music corpus that ismore clearly defined in the next chapter. The methodical points of the analysis are laid down in thischapter as well. And since the metaphorical conceptions in rap music 'are generally specific to thesubculture that either adopts them from the dominant culture or creates them to address their owncultural needs' (Crossley 2005: 501), variations on an intra cultural level will be noted as well.

This paper raises the question if American rap music can be seen as standing in the tradition of the Beat Generation, an artistic and ideological movement that is treated as the foundation of the term Counter Culture as it will be used in the further progress.The definition of this term is based on three texts: 'The Culture of Spontaneity' by Daniel Belgrad, 'The White Negroe' by Norman Mailer and 'The Philosophy of the Beat Generation' by Jack Kerouac. These works have in common that they are all concerned with the phenomenon of the American Counter-Culture in general and with the Beat Generation in particular - be it from Kerouac's personal point of view, from a contemporary one like Mailer's, or from the scholarly perspective of Belgrad. They each deal with different aspects of this movement and in this give a broad definition of it, including ideological as well as formal points.These individual notions are then used to construct a basis for a comparison. They are compared to respective aspects in rap music, with no special regard to decades, geographic focal points or stylistic tendencies. The rap culture is rather seen as an entity, the different artists as manifestations of its ideas. This means that the personal views and works of rap musicians are as important as their common denominator and are treated likewise. Yet there needs to be a distinction between those rap artists that create in accordance to the original ideas of Hip Hop and those who compromised on their musical integrity, whether due to the taste of the main stream or to artistic misleadings. The term 'Counter Culture' itself proves to be very helpful here, for it already implies that the followers of this movement oppose the 'Culture' of the mainstream and can therefore not be part of it, like the latter group of rap artists is.Finally, the aim of this paper is to trace the similarities of the two movements, but also to highlight the differences - the reasons why rap Music should not be considered as part of the American Counter-Culture, as a new Beat Generation.

Much hip-hop music [.] serves a sort of 'watchdog' function' (Riggs, Tectonic). Since groups like Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy introduced political rap music during the late Eighties, a certain branch of this sub culture took over the mission they inherited from their predecessors, namely artists like Gil Scott Heron and groups like the Last Poets. Those rap musicians consider their task as artists to give expression to their function as part of the national conscience. 'Lyrics from different artist range from anti-American to revolutionary to more sobering ideas that encourage listeners to simply stay aware and involved' (Riggs, Obama). What they all have in common is that they were more often than not directed at American presidents. The list of examples is long and even dates back to the Reagan-era, but especially George W. Bush was a very prominent target.It can be assumed that this list will soon also include Barack Obama, whose race for the presidency and his election as the United States of America's 44th president have created a lot of controversy. Many different conceptions and notions have come into existence around the person Obama and his political career - before and after the Inauguration. His views on critical issues, his aims as a president, his whole philosophy have found a broad response across any social and intellectual boundaries. Especially in mass media, the presence of Obama is enormous and has contributed a lot to his pop-star-like-status. A comparison that holds even more truth if uttered in regard of the many songs inspired by and dedicated to Barack Obama. His impact on music is unprecedented and the effects it had on the various genres are manifold. While he was embraced with little question from the mainstream, giving some a new audience, while providing others a new word to rhyme with, it have been such non-primarily mainstream genres like Hip-Hop music1 that made their critical voice heard.

Als einer der ersten Geistesmenschen seiner Zeit war er bemüht seine Gedanken in einer Form wiederzugeben, die auch vom einfachen Volk verstanden werden konnte und gab dem Mittelhochdeutschen gegenüber dem Lateinischen den Vorzug. Doch nicht nur die Sprache in der er seine Schriften und Predigten verfasste schaffte ihm Bewunderer, sondern gerade deren Anwendung verhalf ihm zu dem Ruf eines geschulten Rhetorikers. Meister Eckhart führte die deutsche Sprache zu einer spirituellen und rhetorischen Ausdruckskraft, wie sie sie zuvor nie erreicht hatte . Diese Abhandlung untersucht, welcher rhetorischen Stilmittel sich Meister Eckhart in seinen Reden der Unterweisung bedient und welche Wirkung er mit diesen innerhalb dieses Traktates erzielt. Abschließend wird der Versuch unternommen zu erkunden, warum Meister Eckhart sich dieser doch sehr poetischen Sprache als Ausdruck seiner Gedanken bedient. Die Analyse der Stilmittel wird sich nach der Einteilung Ivo Braaks Poetik in Stichworten richten, wobei der Fokus auf den Figuren liegen wird, da diese in weitaus größerer Zahl vorhanden sind, handelt es sich bei dem Traktat doch in erster Linie um eine argumentative Ausführung.

Neben der kompletten Terminologie dieser Subkultur wurden auch zahlreiche Ausdrücke teilweise unverändert in die Deutsche Sprache übernommen oder fanden oft erst Jahre später eine sprachliche Integration. Auch heutzutage, nach fast drei Jahrzehnten, ist der sprachliche Ursprung in der Musik vieler deutscher Rapkünstler noch unverkennbar. Synchrone Studien zur Rolle des Englischen in dieser Musik sind höchst ertragreich und eine diachrone Studie zu der Entwicklung eben dieser Beziehungen ist erstrebenswert. Keine andere Gruppe wäre für solch eine Studie geeigneter als das Stuttgarter Quartett Die Fantastischen Vier. Sie gehören mit zu den Begründern deutschsprachiger Rapmusik und haben zudem erst kürzlich ihr 20-jähriges-Bestehen gefeiert. Mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen, das über die Jahrzehnte hinweg an Konstanz behalten hat, decken sie die deutsche Rapmusik in all ihren Phasen komplett ab ein Kriterium welches von keinen anderen Künstlern erfüllt wird. Diese Arbeit widmet sich dem Einfluss der Englischen Sprache in der Musik dieser Gruppe und versucht zu ergründen, ob darin über die Jahre hinweg gewisse Tendenzen zu sehen sind die auf eine Entwicklung schließen lassen. In einer englischen, anlässlich des 125. Geburtstags des Autors besorgten Übersetzung, konfrontiert der Übersetzer Michael Hofmann den Leser gleich auf der ersten Seite mit der Bezeichnung Gregor Samsas als monströse Kakerlake 1 und entfachte damit erneut einen schon lange schwelenden Disput über die Natur des von Kafka umschriebenen Ungeziefers. Dies mag dem Kenner der Originalfassung übertrieben erscheinen, doch in der anglo-amerikanischen Literaturkritik hat eben diese Diskussion bereits eine lange Tradition. So behandelte der russische Schriftsteller Vladimir Nabokov in Vorlesungen über Kafkas Werk den Punkt ausführlich. Als Insektenkenner fiel es Nabokov, trotz der vom Autor nur spärlich im Text verstreuten Hinweise, leicht, das Ungeziefer auf eine bestimmte Insektengruppe einzuengen und die Vorstellung Gregor Samsas als eine monströse Kakerlake abzutun. Er definierte die neue Erscheinungsform des Protagonisten als die einer Bettwanze, nicht einmal unähnlich der dahin geworfenen Bezeichnung der alten Dienstmagd gegen Ende der Geschichte, die Gregor mehrmals neckisch einen Mistkäfer 3 nennt. Jedoch lässt allein die Tatsache, dass solche Fehlinterpretationen existieren, zumal in tausendfachem Druck, die Frage aufkommen, inwieweit eine Übersetzung des Textes überhaupt noch der ursprünglichen Intention des Autors nahekommt. Um eine Vorstellung davon zu bekommen, sollte zuerst die Haltung Kafkas zu seinem Text bekannt sein.

Eines dieser Schicksale ist das von Hammoudi, einem jungen Syrer, der nach erfolgreichem Medizinstudium in Paris einer lukrativen Festanstellung als kosmetischer Chirurg entgegensieht, bei einem Kurzaufenthalt in seiner Heimat dann allerdings in den Strudel des syrischen Bürgerkriegs hineingezogen wird.In den Episoden mit Hammoudi wird das vielleicht eindringlichste Bild des Krieges gezeichnet, da er diejenige Romanfigur ist, die in Syrien bleibt und in ihrer umkämpften Heimatstadt in einem Krankenhaus im Untergrund die Verletzten versorgt. Dort trotzt er als Arzt dem Chaos des Bürgerkrieges, der Willkür des Tötens und dem Machtkampf des Assad-Regimes.In vielen Punkten erinnern Gott ist nicht schüchtern und insbesondere die Figur des Hammoudi an Albert Camus' mehr als siebzig Jahre zuvor, nämlich 1947, erschienenen Roman Die Pest. Der Protagonist des Buches, der sich gegen Ende auch als der Erzähler zu erkennen gibt, ist Dr. Bernard Rieux, ein verheirateter Arzt in seinen Dreißigern, der in der algerischen Küstenstadt Oran lebt und praktiziert. Als dort eine Pestseuche ausbricht, ist er derjenige, der als erstes und am entschlossensten dagegen ankämpft.Joseph P. Strelka merkt zu der Figur und der Funktion des Arztes in Die Pest an: Der wichtigste Kämpfer gegen den in diesem Roman geschilderten Pestausbruch in Oran ist Dr. Bernard Rieux, der einen Autor und Humanisten symbolisiert, welcher das Chaos der totalitären Epidemie um einer positiven Ordnung der Gesundheit und des Lebens willen bekämpft.Die drei von Strelka genannten Aspekte, auf denen auch die nachfolgende Textanalyse beruht, sind der Humanismus des Arztes, das ihn umgebende totalitäre Chaos und das Handeln um einer positiven Lebens- und Gesundheitsordnung willen. Diese Arbeit möchte aufzeigen, dass beide Arztfiguren als Widerstandskämpfer betrachtet werden können, die mit ihrem jeweiligen Handeln das sie umgebende totalitäre Chaos bekämpfen. Hierfür werden zunächst die Gemeinsamkeiten der beiden Figuren hinsichtlich ihres persönlichen Hintergrunds, des Kontexts ihres Wirkens und der Ausübung ihres Berufs aufgezeigt, bevor der Hauptunterschied zwischen Hammoudi und Dr. Bernard Rieux herausgearbeitet wird.

Dass diese Musikrichtung auch aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht höchst interessant ist, dürfte jedem klar sein der sich einmal eingehender damit beschäftigt hat und sich nicht von der, zugegebenermaßen meist oberflächlichen, Vermarktung durch die Musikindustrie und all ihren im Zeitalter der Globalisierung fast täglich neu aufkommenden Auswüchsen abschrecken lässt.Aus germanistischer Sicht birgt diese Musikrichtung noch aus einem ganz anderen Grund enormes Potential, denn fast nirgendwo sonst treffen zwei Sprachkulturen auch heute noch so unverdünnt aufeinander. Auf der einen Seite die der (afro-)amerikanischen Gründerväter, auf der anderen Seite die der deutschen Nachahmer, denn zumindest in den Anfangstagen lief es darauf hinaus. Das beste Beispiel hierfür sind nach wie vor Die Fantastischen Vier, ein Musikerkollektiv aus dem Raum Stuttgart, welches in den frühen Achtzigern durch die in und um die Baden-Württembergische Landeshauptstadt stationierten amerikanischen Besatzungskräfte in direkten Kontakt mit einer damals noch fast ausschließlich den Amerikanern vorbehaltenen Subkultur kam. Was daraus resultierte war ein sich schnell in ganz Deutschland verbreitender Drang diese subkulturellen Wertvorstellungen nicht nur nachzuahmen sondern auch auf die eigene, in den meisten Fällen doch recht anders geartete Realität zu übertragen.Dies führte letztlich auch sprachlich zu der Herausforderung etwas in fremden Worten vorgefasstes auf das Deutsche zu übertragen, in das Deutsche zu integrieren. Einer recht großen Herausforderung, da so ziemlich die gesamte Terminologie einer an sozio-kulturellen Hintergründen und Ritualen so reichen Subkultur wie dem Hip Hop dem Deutschen Sprachschatz fremd ist. Die Arten mit dieser Herausforderung umzugehen sind höchst unterschiedlich und reichen von Ablehnung, über sinnvolle Integration bis hin zu fast bedingungsloser Akzeptanz.
