La edición que ha llegado a manos de los lectores franceses y que ha dado ha conocer este libro lleva el copyright ilocalizable de «Marie Concorde, éditeur 1970» ; dice ser una traducción del inglés (atribuida a una tal Françoise Maleval) de Memoirs of Erotic Bookseller, cuyo autor es Armand Coppens «con la colaboración de su esposa, Clémentine, exhausta, y de su lejano amante». Dados la ausencia intencionada o no en el título inglés del artículo an (un) delante de Erotic (que, en todo caso, es un error revelador del poco conocimiento del inglés del autor) y el nombre de la esposa de éste Clémentine, evidentemente francés, los curiosos e investigadores llegaron a la conclusión de que el recurso a una posible traducción del inglés no fue sino una artimaña para despistar a posibles indiscretos y que Armand Coppens es (o era), efectivamente, de nacionalidad francesa o, por lo menos, de lengua francesa. Hace pocos años, el editor y escritor francés Jean-Jacques Pauvert, especialista en literatura erótica, nos puso sobre la pista de un posible librero, de nombre Armand Coppens, en Amsterdam, Holanda. Pero ni él ni nosotros obtuvimos respuesta a nuestras cartas, ni tenemos constancia de que exista tal librero, ni de nadie que responda a este nombre, en la dirección que se nos dio. Por lo tanto, sigue el enigma. Sea como fuere, el caso es que estas Memorias de un librero pornógrafo se inscriben, aunque la historia se sitúe en nuestro siglo y bien podría estar ocurriendo todavía ahora en cualquier ciudad de Europa, en la mejor tradición francesa de la literatura erótica del siglo XVIII, siglo muy fructífero y eminentemente creativo en este género. Este librero de ocasión pasa de la página al acto, de la biblioteca a la alcoba, del libro a la cama con el desenfado y el tacto de un erudito y de un disoluto. Entre lo que la lectura de ciertos libros suscita en la fantasía sexual de un librero bibliófilo y los actos que su fantasía le conducen irresistiblemente a llevar a cabo, median apenas sutiles fronteras que ningún ser humano sería capaz de delimitar y menos aún de juzgar.
