Les chapeaux à petits bords étaient royalistes et se nommaient des morillos; les libéraux portaient des chapeaux à larges bords qui s'appelaient des bolivars. Voilà de quoi attirer l'attention de quelqu'un qui vit dans la république bolivarienne du Venezuela ! Vous connaissez sans doute Simón Bolívar, le Libertador qui conquit l'indépendance de nombreux pays d'Amérique latine. Né à Caracas en 1783, il est le héros absolu du Venezuela, référence politique majeure de tous les gouvernants, jusqu'à Hugo Chávez, qui en a fait son modèle et son inspirateur. Vous connaissez sans doute moins Pablo Morillo (1775-1837), comte de Carthagène et marquis de La Puerta, surnommé le Pacificador. Ce militaire fut le chef des forces espagnoles durant la Guerre d'Indépendance et donc l'adversaire direct de Simón Bolívar, entre 1815 et 1820. Chapeaux à la mode. Ces deux personnages ne sont pas passés inaperçus dans la France de l'époque, qui venait de sortir de l'épisode napoléonien et entrait dans la Restauration. A tel point que la mode du moment s'est emparée de l'opposition entre les deux hommes. Sont en effet créés deux chapeaux portant leur nom : un à larges bords, le bolivar, l'autre à petits bords, le morillo, comme le signale Victor Hugo. Curieusement, ces chapeaux faisaient également office de signe de ralliement politique, en étant calqués sur les idéologies des deux personnages : les royalistes portaient le morillo, tandis que les libéraux portaient le bolivar ! Le dictionnaire Trésor de la langue française informatisé fait mention du bolivar : BOLIVAR, subst. masc. : Chapeau évasé adopté en France vers 1820, imité de celui que portait le grand libérateur de l'Amérique latine (France 1907). L'homme au bolivar; être coiffé du bolivar Il précise même que le bolivar passera ensuite dans l'argot populaire pour désigner tout type de chapeau: 3. Bolivar. Chapeau, ? dans l'argot du peuple . tout couvre-chef, de feutre ou de paille, rond ou pointu. A. Delvau, Dict. de la lang. verte, 1866, p. 38. La 9e édition du Dictionnaire de l'Académie française le mentionne également : BOLIVAR, n. m. 2. Vieilli.
