Roger Armfelt (1897-1955) was an educationalist and school reformer. While working for the BBC during World War Two Armfelt monitored night broadcasts across Europe from his office at the BBC in London. He began to write novels which used his experiences of Devon in particular to recount how local communities adjusted to or resisted possible developments in secondary education. The books are quite drawn out conversational exchanges between adults in small towns or villages squabbling about various community issues including the kind of local schools' provision available.
