Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Beyond the Pleasure Principle, edited by Illari Laamanen. Featuring: John Divola, Armi Ratia, Estelle Hanania, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen, Aaron Schuster, Takeshi Murata, Tyler Adams, Luigi Russolo, Reba Maybury, Kohei Yoshiyuki, Nicole Howalt. Hardcover. 144 pages. With poster insert. Designer: Johanna Lundberg. Printer: Göteborgs Tryckeriet. "According to Sigmund Freud, the pleasure principle refers to the instinctual seeking of pleasure and avoiding pain in order to satisfy biological and psychological needs. Pleasure principle is oftentimes considered to be the strongest impulse guiding individual?s life. In his later writings, Sigmund Freud refers to the ?compulsion to repeat?, and declares that it might well be powerful enough to disregard the pleasure principle. This publication taps into this tension. The underlying motive isto create a scenario that deals as much with our complex relationship with nature and habitat as it does with transformation and letting go. An emphasis is put on the physical shared environment, but the tone is psychologically charged. Beyond the Pleasure Principle thrives from similar thematic framework as FCINY?s previous publication The Powers That Be that used the knowledge of the body and manifestations of physical energy as its point of departure. But in this case the physical and psychological energies and tensions can be considered to be intertwined, and analyzed through artistic gestures and three key themes: ritual, retrograde and repetition.Beyond the Pleasure Principle was produced on the occasion of two exhibitions, The Pleasure Principle at Sinne in Helsinki (June 4?July 31, 2016) and The Limits of Control at Station Independent Projects in New York City (August 13?September 4, 2016). The Pleasure Principle features works by John Divola, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen and Armi Ratia. The Limits of Control features works by Tyler Adams, Estelle Hanania, Nicolai Howalt, Jouko Lehtola, Takeshi Murata, Iiu Susiraja and Kohei Yoshiyuki. The exhibitions are curated by Ilari Laamanen and produced by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York in collaboration with Sinne and Station Independent Projects.".

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good Minus. This may be a first edition (NAP) or it may not be, don't know enough about the publisher to say. You can see the covers in the photos. There is a thin stain just off the front top edge. There are a few small tanned areas on the spine (see photos). The rear cover has a couple of tiny spots along with a little toning off its top edge. The spine has two wrinkles or crinkles. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright. The cover edges and corners look good, no issues. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any binding issues. The covers are nicely tight as well. The interior of the book is in solid condition. The pages appear to be very clean. I haven't found any soiling. There is a little bit of light toning off the edges, when the edges are white. At one point in time a group of early pages appear to have gotten a little bit stuck to one another at the edges. I'm guessing that because there are a handful of instances where a little bit of the paper from a page got pulled over to the corresponding spot on the facing page. It seems only to have been an issue with the first half-dozen or so pages. It's not terribly conspicuous, the instances are just right off the middle edges, though in one case it created a scuff that obstructs parts of five words. I'm not finding any creasing on the pages, no turned-down corners. There's a little bit of light crinkling on some of the early pages. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.
