With the advent of prohibition he moved to Cincinnati & forged the most powerful bootlegging organization in the nation. Bribing government officials enabled him to operate without interference for two years. He amassed a fortune & was known as "King of the Bootleggers." Finally, he was sent to prison. While there he heard that his wife was running around with a government agent. The marital problems of Remus & his wife escalated, & on the day of their divorce hearing, Remus shot & killed his wife. He turned himself in & plead temporary insanity caused by his wife's betrayal. The prosecutor at this high profile trial was Charles Phelps Taft, 2nd, youngest son of the Chief Justice & former President of the United States. It was a nationwide front page news.
