Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First edition thus. First edition thus, the first with the Howard Chandler Christy coior illustrated plates. Hardcover in blue-green cloth ornately decorated with Mararet Armstrong designed cover and spine. Printed by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. 169 pp. With color illustrated title page and 7 additional full page color illustrations by Christy. Very good, front gilt bright, narrow crescent tidemarks to the bottom of the pages not affecting the text. The story of Mr.George Fairfax, an old, widowed farmer in the Virginia mountains who is thought to be stern and unfriendly because he always wears black, but is actually kind and generous. He takes in a young orphan boy and tells the youth of his experience in the American Revolutionary War and of his lost love. The book was first published in 1896 but this, the preferred edition, has a number of things going for it that earlier editions did not: the beautful Howard Chandlet Christy illustrations, the Margaret Armstrong art nouveau binding design, and the famous printer, D.B. Updike of the Merrymount Press. Howard Chandler Christy (illustratore).
