Arnheim war wohl die größte und ehrgeizigste Luftlandeoperation des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Sie war zwar taktisch ein Sieg der Alliierten, die einen Keil tief in die deutsche Verteidigung treiben konnten. Doch aus strategischer Sicht und gemessen am Zweck dieser Operation endete diese für sie mit einer Niederlage. Trotz hoffnungsloser Unterlegenheit der Deutschen und trotz der Tapferkeit der britischen Soldaten konnten diese keinen Sieg erkämpfen. Die andere große Luftlandeoperation des Zweiten Weltkriegs war die Schlacht um Kreta 1941. Der bekannte Militärhistoriker und Generalleutnant a.D. Franz Uhle-Wettler schildert diese Schlacht aus deutscher Sicht. Er stellt klar, was den Vergleich dieser beiden Luftlandeschlachten noch heute so interessant macht. Doch Uhle-Wettler skizziert nicht nur die äußeren militärischen Ereignisse, seine Überlegungen zum Thema sind grundsätzlicher: Er geht der Frage nach, was in diesen Fällen die Ursachen der deutschen Siege war und was, ganz allgemein, als Ursache von militärischen Siegen angesehen werden kann.
