One of 100 numbered copies. Octavo. 66 pp. Publisher?s limp blue suede with a blind-stamped tree on the front, gilt cover lettering. Some dryness to edges, lower spine with small abrasion. A very good copy.Inscribed by the publisher (GBH) to early film actress Florence Nash (whose sister, Mary, was a considerably more famous actress). The Hitopadesa is a classical Sanskrit text of shlokas (verses), fables, and moral tales. Arnold?s translation was from a Persian version. The Hitopadesa was a favorite among the scholars of the British Raj. It was also the first Sanskrit book to be printed in the Nagari script. Edwin Arnold translated numerous Sanskrit texts but his most famous book was The Light of Asia, a biography of Gautama Buddha taken from the Lalitavistara Sutra.
