Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. A very good copy in full, plain tan, polished leather. Spine with 5 raised bands and a leather title label in burgundy with gilt titling. Some scratches and edgewear a tiny nick with loss to the rear top of the spine o/w a sound clean copy. The page edges are marbled but faded. Plain endpapers with the slight remains of a label/bookplate or ? On the front paste down, and a small neat former owners name in ink across the front free endpaper and the date (1838) to the foot of the ffep as well. There is also a presentation note from the Author - see below - but otherwise no other Inscriptions or marks. Very clean tight and bright. From the 'Advertisement' to the book : - "The following Treatise contains the substance of a Lecture delivered before a Scientific audience at the Royal Institution on the 11th March 1836, which is now, by the addition of elementary illustration, fitted for popular use." . Arnott explains the importance of proper ventilation in preventing disease and maintaining good health, and provides practical advice for achieving optimal air quality in various types of buildings. These include Ordinary Rooms; Churches; Houses of Parliament; Theatres; Hospitals, Hot-Houses, Zoos, etc, etc. The book also includes illustrations and diagrams to aid in the construction and use of the various apparatus described. "On Warming and Ventilating" is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the science of indoor air quality and the practical applications of heating and ventilation technology. A solid, well-preserved copy to boot of the uncommon 1855 1st edition of this important study of the fire-place and its attendant ventilation. Solid and VG in its pebbled russet boards, with just a touch of very light restoration along the spine ends. Neat stamp of ":Matthew Hall Library" in London at both endpapers, clean former owner signature, to the front free endpaper. Otherwise very clean internally, with no writing or markings to speak of. 23 figures complementing Neil Arnott's text, lengthy catalogue of new titles (or editions) by the publisher printed at the rear.
