Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. In the heart of the Driftless Area, where glaciers missed the land and mining once dominated, this book details the local geology and geography of Jo Daviess County, Illinois. This region features valleys, hills, caves, and abundant wildlife, shaped by millions of years of water, ice, and wind erosion. The area's geography has shaped its settlement and development as well, with Native Americans and settlers exploiting the region's rich soil and mineral wealth and migrating farmers finding opportunity here. This book combines geological principles with the processes and conditions that have uniquely shaped the Galena and Elizabeth quadrangles of Jo Daviess County. An analysis of local rocks and formations reveals the history of the land, from its base of pre-Cambrian quartzite to its surface of glacial deposits. The historical development of the region is chronicled, from the mining industry to the growth of agriculture, transportation, and modern land management. Whether you're a lifelong resident, a newcomer, or an armchair traveler, this book offers a fascinating look at the natural and human history of a unique region. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
