Written during his time in England and dedicated (indirectly) to figures in Elizabeth I?s court, it was published amid secrecy due to its controversial content. The work is structured as a philosophical dialogue involving gods of classical mythology (primarily Jupiter, with input from Sophia/Wisdom, Mercury, and others). It unfolds as a council of the gods deciding to reform the heavens by expelling the ?triumphant beast??a constellation of vices and corruptions that have dominated the moral and religious order. The gods debate replacing these vices with corresponding virtues, effectively renewing the cosmos.ABOUT THIS COPY: Bound in bright red cloth with blind debossed and gilt lettering on the cover.
