He was part of the talented circle of immigrant artists (he had come to America from a little town in Poland in 1905) that included Max Weber, Ben Shahn, William Zorach, Moses and Raphael Soyer. A protege of Alfred Stieglitz, by the 1930s he was being appreciated by the best eyes of the time. His last one~man exhibition was held in New York in 1958; a memorial retrospective was held in 1964. This beautiful volume, with its 63 colorplates and 129 black~and~whites~a retrospective between covers~will be eagerly welcomed by those familiar with Tofel's work and discovered with enthusiasm by newcomers to his visionary and compassionate art. Arthur Granick, a lifelong art collector and friend of many artists, is by profession a musician. He was an intimate friend of Jennings Tofel and was uniquely privileged during the last twenty years of that artist's life to be shown each of his paintings and drawings on completion. He also had access to all documents and manuscripts left by the artist. Art critic Alfred Werner, who wrote the Introduction, has lectured at many colleges and universities; his most recent book is Abrams' Max Weber. A biographical outline, bibliography, and index, as well as selected writings by the artist, lend interest to this unusual volume. 192 illustrations. including 63 in full color.
