Arthur Heffter (1859-1925), widmete sich zuerst dem Studium der Naturwissen…schaften, bes. der Chemie, wurde 1893 in Greifswald Dr.phi., oblag später in Leipzig und Strassburg dem Medizinstudium und promovierte in 1891 in Leipzig. Nachdem er schon früher am Pharmakologischen Institut in Leipzig (Boehm), wo er sich 1892 für Pharmakologie habilitierte (1896 a.o.Prof.). 1898 zum Ordinarius für Pharmakologie und medizinische Chemie in Bern ernannt, übernahm er 1906 die Lehrkanzel in Marburg und wirkte von 1910 bis zu seinem 1925 erfolgten Tode in Berlin. Heffter, dessen wissenschaftliche Arbeitsausrichtung vorwiegend eine chemische war, befaßte sich mit der Frage des Schicksals der Arzneistoffe im Organismus, mit der Pharmakologie des Schwefels, Arsens, Jods und Quecksilber, mit Gutachten auf dem Gebiete der öffentlichen Gesundheitspflege. -cf. Seine Selbstversuche erweisen die meskalinhaltige Alkaloidfraktion als hauptverantwortlich für die aus der völkerkundlichen Literatur bekannte Rauschwirkung." Torsten Passie, Meskalinforschung in Deutschland 1887-1950. Grundlagenforschung, Selbstversuche und Missbrauch. Arthur Carl Wilhelm Heffter (1859-1925) isolierte 1897 das Meskalin aus dem Peyotekaktus. Dies war die erste Isolation einer natürlich vorkommenden psychedelischen Substanz in reiner Form.
