No Binding. Condizione: Fine. This is an original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Arthur Hunt Chute (1889/1890-1929), a prominent author, journalist, explorer, and World War I veteran. Though born in Stillman Valley, Illinois, his parents moved the family back to their native Nova Scotia in 1892, where he grew up in Halifax and Wolfville. He was highly educated, attending Acadia University (graduating in 1910), Newton, and Edinburgh University. Before his military service, he worked as a war correspondent covering conflicts in the early part of the 20th century. When World War I broke out in 1914, Chute enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving as an officer with the Canadian Army Artillery from 1915 to 1917. His military career ended in 1917 when he was honorably discharged due to a burst eardrum and shell shock. He channeled these brutal experiences into his gripping and famous 1918 war memoir, The Real Front. Following the war, Chute's deep respect for the sea, travel, and adventure drove his career as a fiction writer and journalist, leading him to author books such as The Mutiny of the Flying Spray, Far Gold, and The Crested Seas. His adventurous life was tragically cut short on September 22, 1929, when his plane crashed into Lake Manitoba. The letter is addressed to "Mr Iles," who is undoubtedly George Iles (1852-1942), a well-known Canadian-American author, book collector, and philanthropist. Chute writes from his home in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, noting that he is "back safe in the bosom of my family," a poignant statement given the ongoing World War. He thanks Iles for generously augmenting his library and discusses reading The Map of Life (by W.E.H. Lecky), a book on Sir Charles Tupper, and The New Era in Canada. Most notably, Chute mentions being laid up with a "bad attack in my head lately," which is preventing him from writing. Given that he had recently been discharged from the Western Front for shell shock and a burst eardrum, this statement is a direct, historical reference to his physical and psychological war injuries.
