The book - a social commentary on the Great Depression - was met with somewhat mixed reviews, prompting Cain to remark "a simple tale, told briefly, is what people really like.".

Their central contention was that strong selection led to the close adaptation of all aspects of the genome of organisms to their environment. The research centred on the work of E. B. Ford and H. B. D. Kettlewell, on the one hand, and A. J. Cain, on the other. Ford was influenced by R. A. This is a stated "First Edition" of the original Knopf printing, but NOTE again that it bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
