He inscribed this book to his nephew, Nathan J. Lockhart, who perished at sea only six months after being married. The book was passed on to his son, Nathan, who was yet to be born when his father was gifted the book. "The sea claimed him, and some untoward fate was his, we know not what. He had just married and set up a home. His bride was Nancy Whitman, of Aylesford, N. S., who six months after her marriage faced the dreadful intelligence that her husband had perished at sea. My mother never wholly recovered from that blow.
