This book provides a detailed survey of tintinnoina, an abundant and significant group of oceanic protists, based on samples collected during the Carnegie expedition. The author compares species found in the Carnegie samples with those reported by other researchers to present a comprehensive picture of the diversity and distribution of the tintinnoina, helping the reader understand their significance in marine ecosystems. The book's exploration of the morphology and ecology of tintinnoina aids in a greater understanding of the natural history of the ocean and its inhabitants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book provides an unparalleled exploration of the Tintinnoinea, a fascinating group of pelagic ciliates found in the illuminated zone of the sea. As the main quantitative constituent of the marine microplankton, Tintinnoinea's vibrant diversity has led to its classification into thirteen families and sixty-two genera, comprising over seven hundred species. The text comprehensively details the Tintinnoinea's morphology, with a focus on the minute organization of its secreted and often highly ornamented lorica, an exoskeleton that characterizes the group. The authors trace the evolution of the lorica from simple cylindrical forms to the complex structures seen in the higher families, providing insights into the adaptive strategies and ecological success of these microorganisms. Through extensive analysis of the Tintinnoinea's distribution in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, the book sheds light on the relationships between structural evolution and environmental influences, revealing patterns of frequency and diversity that shape the dynamics of marine ecosystems. This in-depth examination establishes Tintinnoinea as a cornerstone of marine biology, highlighting their ecological significance and evolutionary adaptability. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
