Introduction by Wolfram Eberhard. The first book in English to fully explore this 1000 year-old Chinese custom, LOTUS LOVERS examines the origins of the practice; efforts by missionaries and others to extinguish it; the peculiar sexual fascination that the tiny foot, and the resultant "Willow Walk" held for many Chinese men; the physiological effects of foot binding; etc. Includes interviews with women whose feet were bound in childhood, and their firsthand accounts of the suffering it caused. Also has translations from Chinese erotic literature extolling the beauty of the "Golden Lotus" -- a poetic metaphor for the tiny bound foot. This is the first Prometheus printing, with complete number row (54321) on the copyright page, but it is actually a reprint of a book originally published in 1966. Contains a Foreword and ten chapters, e.g. Origin and Presence; Emancipation Movements; Lotus Lovers; Wondrousness of the Lotus; Secret Chronicle of the Lotus Interest; Reckless and Cruel Treatment of the Drunken Lotus; The Tiny Foot in Truth and Fiction; Painful History of the Lotus Hooks; Ladies of the Bound-Foot Era; etc. + Two appendices. List of chapter notes/sources. Bibliography. Index. Bound in the original black leatherette, lettered in shiny gold on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "Footbinding for women in China was a curious, painful custom that deformed the foot and kept it from growing more than a few inches in length.". First Prometheus Books edition.
