Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of medieval Gascony, specifically focusing on the region surrounding Bordeaux during the period of English rule. It offers a meticulously researched exploration of land tenure, rural life, and the unique social structures that shaped this era. The author's primary lens is the extensive estate of the Archbishop of Bordeaux, a powerful figure who held significant sway over the economic and social landscape. By examining the archbishop's landholdings and administrative practices, the book sheds light on the intricacies of feudal relationships, agricultural production (particularly viticulture), and the diverse forms of tenancy that characterized medieval Gascony. The analysis extends beyond the archbishop's estate to encompass the lands of the Chapter of Saint-AndrÃÂ , offering a comparative perspective on ecclesiastical land ownership and management. This book invites readers to explore the contrasts between Gascony's individualistic social organization and the communal systems prevalent in other parts of medieval Europe, such as England and northern France. It reveals the complex interplay of economic, social, and political forces that shaped the lives of both landlords and tenants in this unique region. By delving into the intricacies of medieval Gascon society, this book not only provides valuable insights into a specific historical context but also offers a broader understanding of the dynamics of power, property, and social organization in the medieval world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
