"Aunt Liza's "Praisin' Gate" by Effie Graham is a scarce 1916 Kansas-set work centered around Aunt Liza, an elderly disabled woman who had once been enslaved in Tennessee and now lives in Kansas. Written in period Black dialect, the book reflects the racial, regional, and social attitudes of its time, while also giving Aunt Liza a memorable voice, presence, and moral center. The title refers to her "Praisin' Gate," marked by a handwritten sign, which becomes part of the book's character and charm. The story carries strong Americana and Kansas regional interest, with themes touching on formerly enslaved people building lives in the West, community life, faith, dignity, humor, and the changing social world of the early 20th century. It also includes references to the women's suffrage movement, adding another layer of historical interest. The publication date is estimated but most likely around1928. The ampersand at the bottom of the spine is "closed" but the top stain to the text block appears to be a faded green The DJ is from 1928 with a synopsis of the book on the front flap and a list of 25 ERB titles on the reverse. The DJ illustration and frontispiece are by Fred J Arting with the DJ being a color adaption the classic of Tarzan in silhouette. The book is in very good shape with bright red boards and sharp black lettering. The binding is tight and the text block is clean. The is wrinkling near to top of the fore edge of the first few pages. The DJ is fairly bright with some edge & corner wear, small loss at the top of the spine, and rubbing to the spine hinges. There is a 2.75" x 1" piece missing at the bottom of the spine.A good to very good copy of an early Tarzan reprint.
